| What has been the most productive for everyone - early morning (sunrise) or late evening (sunset)?

Location: Grand Rapids MN | You'll get all kinds of responses and most will say fish when you can or both, which I agree with, but if I had to choose one or the other it would come down to water temps. Early season with cooler water temps and cold nights still I would fish evenings so the sun/day has a chance to warm things up for the day. But if it's mid-August with higher water temps then I would fish early mornings (I would actually fish all night during this period). Right or wrong that's what I would tell myself so I have confidence to keep chuckin' hard every second on the water. Maybe someone with more experience can chime in here and share their experiences.

Location: Contrarian Island | I'll take sunset over sunrise any day...for a couple reasons...I hate getting up before it's light out and personally haven't had a ton of action at sunrise...pretty much ever....now some area's like Madison sunrise can be a good time to be on the water esp during the week as you can have very little other musky nuts out there to contend with...
I'll take sunset and moonset/moonrise over sunrise any day...or just fish thru the nite and don't go to sleep..that works too! ; )

| Too bad the question is phrased as an either/or because both are very good. In general, I'll take sunset over sunrise....but anyone who is sleeping through pre-dawn/sunrise (ahem, Nelson) is missing out on opportunities.
Like Targa was saying, pre-dawn/sunrise is most consistent, in my experience, during the warmer summer months. Other times of the year it can be really hit or miss. Sunset is generally good to great all season. |

Location: Ontario | I like bn's method...sleep during the 'Coppertone Shift' and pound it from dusk til dawn... if you have that option. It makes no sense to me where I fish to be out of gas by the end of the day when the bite is gonna pick up. We see lots of guys heading in while we're on our way out. There's nothing better than being sharp, rested and dying to get out there when the sun's hitting the trees. It sure beats hungry, hot, sore, tired etc etc at witching hour.
Why choose one over the other? Fish both of them! When its hot, bright and windy I'll take sleep, shade and cool over draining me, my fuel tank and deep cycle battery eight days a week! If you haven't tried it and your schedule will allow (it goes without saying that this is the #1 factor in all of this, your schedule) try a straight dusk to dawn shift at least once this summer, it really is awesome and can be very productive. Spending all night out on the water will teach you a lot. I work shift work and a couple times a month I'm off work at 11pm. Getting up for the daybreak bite can be rough. By the time we're at the boat and rigged up, its sometimes 2am or 3am. We head out! Fish until 11am or so, head in, sleep all day then head back out at dusk! It has proven to be a really good plan for us in terms of making use of time and getting a good shot at a couple good times of day. I'll take fifty casts at prime time over 1500 casts during the Coppertone Shift any day. Where I fish, daylight/dusk are just more productive. We see and catch more fish.
If I had to pick only one, it'd be sunset.
