Location: Oswego, IL | I am trying to find a solution for this issue. I went out casting this reel the other day and now for some reason I am backlashing. I think i actually have under spooled the line. It seems to catch on the sides of the spool, anyway to get the line to stay coming off more of the middle like avoid running the line all the way to the spool walls? Like I said thats where it is catching. also if someone has one and works like a champ, how many yards total are you putting in? Mono(backing) yrds____ and Braid yrds____? I am also using Cortland Masterbraid in 80lb. Your help is appreciated.

Location: Twin Cities | Don't throw so hard. I have one, it was FULL when Thorne spooled it, i've had about two long cast lengths cut out from knots and fray's, hasn't changed how it casts what so ever. Make sure your free spool is adjust close, very fine line for working and not and make sure your thumb is WELL calibrated. Again, don't pitch for the fences... Posts: 2063 | I have found you have to throw DCG's WITH the wind using the 40LW (even if its only 10mph) - which sucks I generally like to fish a piece of structure into the wind. I have found if you let 100 yards of line out (troll to your first spot) to get the line wet beyond what you will cast helps some as well. Also I have mine very full (burn baby burn) - as Jeff mentioned you dont try to make a bomb cast with this reel. Edited by IAJustin 6/23/2009 11:26 AM

Location: Oswego, IL | I guess I will actually try to add more line, the darn thing is catching on the cast, on the sides of the spool, like its not coming off straight/ and over laping/catching line on the sides. I was maybe thinking of putting something on the sides so the braid only spools from more of the middle instead of all the way each direction.

Posts: 462 Location: Madison Wi. Chain | Before you deceide to alter any features of the reel, I think you should consider reel spooling all the line you have on. It sound like the line is not tight on the spool or it is not even with the levelwind. The fix might be to run a bunch of line out with a heavy topwater. Make sure to tighten down your drag and make sure there is enough tension. Reel line in with a good bend in the rod. Anytime, I respool line I follow a similar protocol except I attach the line to a tree in my front yard and walk down the street until most of the line is out. Good luck with the fix. BG

Location: Oswego, IL | Funny thing is Big Gun, thats how I line all my reels, tie to tree and walk down the street. I did notice the wetter the line, the better it casted, but still was catching the line on the sides of the spool. I guess this thing just take a bit more patience and skill to properly cast far. Nothing compared to my Toro's cast thats for sure. lol

Posts: 105 | Search for other discusions on this, there were some good tips. One was to not fill it up all the way due to the line actually has to go down to go out the LW. If you have a full spool and look at how it goes through the LW you will see what I mean. I just took some line off mine until the line goes straight out the LW without touching it. I'm headed out tonight and will see if this helps. Like mentioned above, adjust your spool tension a little tighter than you normally would and work on using your thumb. I think that reel needs one less bearing or the little plastic things inside the reel like the Abu and other reels have. The spool takes off like a rocket!! M4L

Location: Oswego, IL | I havent opened it up at all to notice that. I will also check, I thought I was under spooled because I basically put the same amount that is on my Toro, but dumb me, shouldve looked and relized the Saltist holds ay more line to begin with. Im going to mess around this week with it, and will let you all know whats I figure out to work the best (for me). Thanks all!

Posts: 431 | The saltist does take a more educated thumb-you can't get sloppy. also, don't cast sidearm or lob lighter baits, you need a good crisp cast. I had significant backlash problems the first day or so, but now that the power pro is broken in and i'm broken in i have very few problems and all can be traced back to operator error. One thing I'm sure you'll notice is with the spool being so wide you can get loops of line on either side of your thumb as you're casting. Don't know if this really causes problems, but i've noticed it. I was doubting my decision after the first day, but now I really like the reel and was considering getting another.

Location: Oswego, IL | Maybe you can buy mine! lol I will be using it for the first time of actual fishing first week of July, I have been practicing using it a a local pond, no fish, just cowgirl with no hooks. I dont know if I am going to have the patience with this thing, when I have two toros by my side also.

Posts: 431 | Don't underestimate the power of the zebco-the biggest fish I've personally heard of out of kinkaid this year was caught with a zebco. I considered selling all of my shtuff and buying some whuppin sticks and zebcos. I revoke my standing offer for you to have a seat in my boat this fall-and you're on your own for LOTW. If you thought Pomme was tough wait til you're walking the bank.

Posts: 105 | Went out tonight as I mentioned earlier and tried my Saltist with less line on it and it seem to make a big difference. Not one backlash!! I would give this a try. Only spool the line up enough that the line runs straight out the levelwind without hitting the top of it. By doing this it left maybe a 1/4" of spool showing. I don't think this will reduce speed to much. I am so use to using my Saltist that when I use my other reels I keep trying to flip the lever to engage the reel. I guess I am use to it now. Kind of funny, anyone else do that? Hope this helps, M4L

Posts: 1460 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | The spool tension is very sensitive. Tweak it carefully.

Location: Oswego, IL | Yeah it took me about 20 casts to actually flip the lever at the right time to get the blades spinning upon impact and have a little distance. I am aslo assuming the wetter the line the easier it flys. Still kinda wierd but patience will prevail. I did notice the tension is sensitive also. Just something that actually will take a smidge of skill to use properly.
