It's June 17th and the Minnesota muskie opener has 13 days under it's belt and Wisconsin has almost 4 weeks. Has the amount of anglers that can afford to be on the water deminished or are "we" not yapping about we caught on lake "X" as much as previous years? If I get some nice mid 40's out of a local metro lake, I will keep my typing fingers from blabbing it until there is a foot of ice that body of water. If I ever get "The" fish I still have the deranged capability of possibly posting the GPS cooridinates of where I got it plus sponsoring a free heroin/hooker night at a local gin mill! I think the days of "immediate good reports" are long gone.

I hear ya Clark. I think it's just the nature of the beast right now, peoples attitudes are tight towards the economy and it relates to this site as well. I'll share some information with you "THE TOP WATER BITE IS ON"!!! Try anything that sounds like "plop, plop, plop" some great action.

It's not necessary to tell everyone the exact details...jut the story and picture could be volunteered. If the lake is small, that's what most do. If it's Mille Lacs, a large Camadian waterbody, Leech or Vermilion, I don't think another fish report will increase pressure much.

Sharing info has always been what makes this place unique, and that won't halt altogether, I bet. Most folks will post when they get a couple nice fish!

probably some of the economic thing, some just people are having to work harder now than years past and have time limits that are extaordinary, another thing this year has been a late spring and poor weather conditions until very recently. a couple guys who are close friends of mine are out working lots harder than i am and i'm getting some private information and pics suggesting that fishing has picked up recently and there are some very, very nice fish hitting nets.

I am somewhat new to this sepcies (3 years) and have noticed its a "dont kiss and tell" kind of thing. Nobody wants someone else fishing their honey hole, but Worrall is right, bigger the lake the more you hear about it. I am headed to LOW July 3rd for a week, and totally intend to post all the pictures and stories that go along with it, I dont mind letting others see and hear where and what I caught fish on, the way I see it if you keep to many secrets about fishing for muskie, the newer people who have a hard time finding or catching them may turn off the sport which none of us want to see happen. We always need people to support the fish and fisheries we all use. I also believe this site and others REALLY do help out A LOT! Expecially to the new crew.

I don't think everyboy has suddenly become all hush-hush about their fishing. The weather patterns as of late have just kept things a few weeks behind from everything I've been hearing. The upcoming warming trend should kick things into gear, and you'll start seeing a lot of pictures and reading a lot of reports. There are and always have been a lot of fish caught in a lot of places that you just don't hear about, and with good reason. I think by early July you'll start hearing a lot more from a lot more people. The next few weeks ought to be pretty good if the weather holds up.

That said, there will never be a time when everybody discloses everything, and that how it ought to be IMO. Part of the fun of muskie fishing is figuring out where the fish are, and what it is they want. If you could read a fishing report that said "go to ___ lake, work the deep weed edges with an orange colored _____ worked slowly along the drop off..." and you did that and caught a fish? Well I can't see that being very much fun...

the economy has not slowed amount of people fishing at all.... if anything there are alot more people out casting for musky.... out of the wood work even during week days, there is a caster on almost every spot.. hasnt been as much pleasure boaters though, probably cause of clouds, rain, and wind though.

Tuesday night we caught on 40" (fat full of shad) muskie on Pleasant Creek, Ia this is a 400 acre lake. The fish was caught trolling in open water around schools of white bass busting on the surface. Surface temp was 73 degrees. This fish ate a 10" Jake (white and black). the bait was 60' behind a planer board. We were trollin at 4.1MPH - Similar reports to come when I return from LOTW July 2nd-11th. I personally don't think there is many "secrets" to muskie fishing - practice makes perfect....And leaving Iowa to fish Canada and MN helps

I don't think the weather has anything to do with it as some people are doing just fine.

I think some people that have been vocal in the past have seen what being vocal does (either in added pressure or being accused of chest-thumping), and just aren't posting much anymore. Others just don't care to post much anymore for various reasons.

So, I think more people are going the way of being more tight lipped.

I've always assumed what is working one day, or hour even, for one guy, might not work the next day or hour. That said, sometimes they do keep working, either because that's what the fish really want or because you have freshly restored confidence in that arsenol and keep throwing it. Either way, what it took for you to discover that confidence in such a lure/tactic/spot is pricey experience on the water. Experience = 1) Time on the water, 2) Casting effort, & 3) What it took to get on the water. Getting out there and learning the fine details involved withing the art of musky hunting is what makes us better fisherman, not so much following the leads from others, although leads can be VERY useful.

I don't discount tips or intuition behind anothers post relating to their catch/success. "Deep weed edges, anywhere rocks meet weeds, blades or minnow baits, blah blah blah. . ." Are great tid-bits that can give you direction and something to think about and apply in your own scenarios. "Why are the fish relating to the deeper weed edges as opposed to the flats..." - A question that allows you to get the juices flowing and gives you incentive to experiment. I, personally, will post such clues, but am rarely, if ever, willing to disclose the place or time to the public ear. . But I'll feed off the easy prey on Lake-Link once in a while. hehehe

IMO, pointing fingers at people "chest thumping" is no different than girls catting about another girls skirt that's "too short" or whatever. That's what forums are for, sharing pic/stories and asking/recieving advice/suggestions. . . Why else sign on?

There are so many stocked now and equipment has gotten so good, they are just easier to catch and no real reason to run to the web and post them....there is far less mystique in today's age.....

What Sam said, and more...I had to delete at least ten answers to one post, I'll hold my hand for now.

Those who share information and successes and failures in the spirit of 'community' are obvious and are appreciated by most here. Anyone who calls that 'chest thumping' is dumber than the person so easily offended by such stupidity.

Just my opinion.

I agree with that Steve, but don't you think they are just so many more places and fish to catch, that is just much easier than in the past? It doesn't take away from my enjoyment, but it is different than it used to be....

No question, Ben. More places to catch nice fish, much wider distribution across the country. Lots of new folks in the sport, too, which is a good thing for us all.
