Posts: 413 Location: Madison WI | I was wondering if anybody else was having problems with the Undertakers. I am in no way shape or form bashing the undertaker because I know they catch fish as I have caught fish on them. However I have had 3 of them that have either had the paint just come off or have cracked down the middle throughout the bait. I will be contacting the company about what I have had happen to them, I was just wondering if I got some bad eggs or if any else has had the same problems. The baits I have had crack haven't hit any logs or rocks that would cause them to crack. It has just been from them seeing the water. Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 416 Location: Madtown, WI | This has happened to nearly every epoxy bait I have ever owned. If water gets through the epoxy coating (through the hook rash, tooth marks or application imperfections), the wood will expand and the epoxy will crack. A lot of times the epoxy will then peel off taking the paint with it leaving you with just the primer. Here is a direct quote from a lure manufacturer that I posed the problem to: "after some use you will wear through the epoxy on any bait. Once it is worn water will get under the topcoat and peel away the rest of it." This problem is not limited to Undertakers, any bait that you use for an extended period of time will eventually "molt" to some extent. Big games, Undertaker, Viper, Phantoms, Cobbs, Wabulls, Homewrecker are all baits I've had a problem with. I've been told the best thing to do is first, "T" all of your hooks and then to cover any cracks with fingernail polish immediately to prevent water from soaking into the wood. For what it's worth, Beaver's Perka and Dunwright's hatchet are my only 2 baits that after extensive use, their topcoat is still in tact. Are your Undertakers new? The reason I ask, in the R&H catalog the blurb about the bait mentions they are trying something new with their epoxy, might be worth checking out.

Posts: 1270 | Personally I wouldn't worry about it. While the pretty paint looks nice I think that a bait that looks a little "beat up" looks better and often times having some water soak into the bait gives it a better action. I have one Wades Wobbler that is cracked right down the middle that I put in a bucked of water overnight before I fish it so it soaks up some water as it runs better IMO when it is full of water.
