Have tried some of the bigger Abu's over the past year, namely the 7000 iC3, and Big Game black reel. Both of these reels esentially share the same side plate gearing and setup. These work fine for casting relatively heavy gear but they tend to backlash when throwing medium weight lures such as cowgirls. One of the problems seems to be the lack of ability to consistently control the casting brake and tendency for the line to loop around the bottom of the levelwind guide. Wouldn't mind finding a heavy duty reel that has a little more finess ability with the mid weight lures.

Looking at the new CT C3 Mag which is marketed as a casting reel. Notice that it has a plate that covers the levelwind screw which should be helpful. Also it has a magnetic cast control.

Also looking at the Ambassadeur Classic Inshore reel. Main reason for looking at this one is that I presume it is based on the C3 and / or Record models and has the finesse needed for slightly lighter lures but with the dual AR feature should hopefully improve the side plate AR bearing issues that I have had with my Record reel (which is the reason I looked into the larger heavier duty models)

Any feedback on these models would be greatly appreciate before I sink $180 to #200 into another reel and potentially not get what I am looking for.

Looking closer at the CT Mag, I'm not sure that there is any levelwind on it unless I am missing something...?

CT reels don't have levelwinds. I don't think the reel model is going to make much difference to you as they all have the same basic braking system (though some have an additional magnet brake). Most people can cast cowgirls OK with the reels, but you need to be aware of the difficulty of casting wind resistant baits into the wind, they can just be hard to cast flawlessly 100% of the time. If you're having a bad day trying to cast cowgirls into the wind, change baits for something more aerodynamic and life will become easier.

Pop out all 4 centrifugal brakes on your iC3's (loosen thumb screws and pull entire drive plate) to make sure all 4 will contact the brake drum. This will help.

Thaks RyanJoz, Will give that a try.

Stupid question, what is the deal with the CT reels not having a levelwind. Seems like that could be a liability if you are not manually guiding the line onto the reel.

Yake, CT reels will cast farther without the level wind to take energy from the spool. This is important in surf casting where distance is everything. In musky fishing I would not want a reel without a level wind.

Classic Inshore all the day. It feels like a tank and cast like a champ. Stainless steel gearing (5.1:1), improved spool design and a longer handle = great torque.

The INSHORE 6500 reel is one of the BEST reels on the market today for all around musky reel.
