So I was out tonight and had a nice fish (45"+) hit a bucktail and get off because the anti-reverse took a a crapper on the hook set. I am in northern WI and fishing a lake that doesn't see a lot of musky action and am going to be here for another 6 days. How long would you wait before going back on that fish? I am assuming its going to be bait shy because it did get hooked.

Keep fishing the spot as there might be a another one there and you also might hook the one in question.

I was on the River and had a muskie grab a TopRaider at boatside. I set, it skyed and shook the hooks. We went back about an hour later and my buddy had it all over a jerk bait he was using, but messed up the figure8, which I feel he could have hooked and maybe caught.

depends.
if its during the week and lakes are slow most of the time i would keep fishing. right before i quit i will hit it again. then hit it again once the next couple days.

on busy weekends though if i move a fish i will go back through a couple times until i am sure that fish is not going to eat what im advertising.i change lures everytime through though. i have seen different fish giong through again. labor day last year in one spot i had a high 40's follow and my trolling motor peddle messed up. went through again. moved a mid 30's next pass through and my third pass caught a 28". only 3 fish i saw that day. its your call i guess. both can work it just depends on the day and your luck i guess.

If I get hooks in a big fish, say maybe mid-morning, and then lose her after a short fight, I usually go back for one more try at the end of the day. If I don't get her to recommit at that time, I generally leave the country the next day.

Right away, the fish was reactive and ready to eat the time is right. We were out last weekend and I had a very big fish come in hot on a suick bait, went into a deep figure eight and about the fifth turn she is on and fighting like mad, unfortunately she got no drag and was off. Three casts later same spot there she is again behind the suick and nails it three feet from the boat..

I've pulled multiple fish out of the same small area, so I will definately cast it again.

Try it again immediately. You never know. I have lost Muskys on the retrieve with both lures and suckers; thrown back in again and had them hit it again and get hooked (and boated) the second time around---within a miute or less of losing them the on the first hook-up.

Just saw a Bucher episode this weekend. He moved a fish 3 times (had it grab the lure once) and on the fourth pass he got it in the boat. All four times he went back on the spot were within an hour and a half total. Looked like He and Spence Petros were on LOTW. + Like the guys have stated above, There could be multiple fish on the same spot. My fishing partner and I have had eight fish up in about a 50-75 foot section of a small bay and almost always see multiple fish in that spot.

A fish that just got off,,,,..........................Is Still an unsatified, Hungry fish.

Why leave, besides most of the lakes that I fish always seem to have multiple fish on that spot.

2 years ago on LOTW I lost a 49 incher . Hit on the figure 8, fought it to the boat and she shook off. Went back at dusk and did not see her. 24 hours later almost to the minute went back and caught her on the cast on the same bait. So, In my world, 24 hours works !!

Why would you leave right away?

Fish there for a while longer, move spots, come back in an hour, if she doesn't hit, come back an hour later, then an hour later, etc...

Sometimes we really over think these fish, The bottom line is they are fish and they are going to feed when they are hungry.

I have personally hooked fish boat side had them do a couple head shakes and get off. When I look down I see the fish is still setting there I figure 8 again and I catch the fish.

I was with a friend of mine a few years back. He has this fish hit right after he makes a couple cranks, he fights the fish all the way to the boat, the fish gets off boat side. He begans to figure 8 around the boat and the fish comes shooting up and nails the lure again.

Ask sucker guys how often they have caught fish that have gotten off and hit just few minutes later.

my biggest, a 46, was caught on the exact same spot that i had a nice musky, which i think was the same one i caught, come completely air born on a topwater strike. it came out head first and went back in head first and its whole body came out of the water lol. not sure if it felt the hooks but it had the lure in its mouth for a second.

I have have had fish throw a bait and hit the exact same bait on the very next cast. If you wore the fish maybe wait till the last spot of the day.

I agree to go back through and try again. Were theres one, theres gotta to be more.

BUT a stupid question that pops into my head is, not trying to be a smarta##, if you fish a spot have a fish on and lose it. Refish the same spot and catch one or have one very interested in what your throwing - how do you know its the same fish? Sure the whole boat side thing and lose it - I can see. But anything else I don't know if I would believe. It all happens sooo fast.

I've always been under the impression once you get them with some steel you pretty much kiss them good bye. Sure eventually you will catch it but the very next cast or pass or hour later - I doubt it. Odds of catching other fish in that same area - enormous.

To me it seems kind of a stretch that a person can say that "yes it is the same fish" unless if maybe you fish in a lake with one muskie in it.

Trying to optimistic but realistic.
