Posts: 1296 Location: WI | I've seen this in a few baits, usually jerkbaits. I just used a Lee's Chopper topwater bait for the first time this weekend and now it has cracks on the bottom, by the eyes, and near the line attachment eye. What causes this? I did have a nice fish eat it (and it was lost due to me being a little early season rusty) but I don't think it's from that. *In no way am I knocking this bait either, they're awesome lures.

Posts: 4266 | Wood expands and contracts in cold water which can cause cracks in the clear coat or the wood if it wasn't sealed well. If it takes on any water at all and then dries out, you can crack the wood and clear doing that. Lures that aren't sealed by using epoxy on the screw eyes will be prone to cracking or holes drilled for thru-wire that aren't sealed. Best thing everybody can do is get some epoxy or nail polish on any cracks to stop the lure from taking on water. Seal up any cracks around the screw eyes, they might appear there because of pressure. Keep in mind that most top-water lures use thin clear coat to keep the lure light. Keep emergency sealer with you for emergency repairs....like catching a fish, and keep it from getting worse in any way. I carry Devcon 5-minute epoxy for quick drying fixes. 2-ton epoxy for repairs that can sit overnight, and nail polish for minor patch work. I also take along spray-on Envirotex if I think the lure that I'm using needs a beefed-up clear coat. Beav

Hey there JKahler! Sorry to hear about your bad piece of wood! Unfortunately you can not tell how a piece of wood is going to act once it is put into water. All of my baits are wood sealed and covered with a light epoxy clear coat. Once in a while, one will just get splits or cracks in the wood out of nowhere. As I state on my website, I want everyone to be completely satisfied with my baits. If any problem should arise, please bring it to my attention by emailing me on my website so I can make it right. If you would just email me JKahler on my site, tell me what color of Chopper it is... you can just keep it and I will send you a brand new one. If anyone else out there has any problems, just let me know so I can fix it for you. I strive to have the highest quality surface baits out there. Good luck everyone! Posts: 462 Location: Antioch, IL | It is refreshing to see great customer service in this day and age. If you guys get the chance to hear Lee speak I highly suggest it. I attended a presentation he did for the Fox River Valley Chapter club. Very informative and a good laid back presentation. Some guys can fish and some guys can stand in front of a crowd and talk about fishing. Lee can do both. Edited by Fish and Whistle 5/26/2009 9:13 PM

Posts: 462 Location: Madison Wi. Chain | The best chopper I have is a little water logged. I will buy that cracked chopper if you want. I have found that as the wood soaks up water it runs a little lower. This subtle difference can be a great triggering mechanism. BG

Posts: 148 Location: Milwaukee, WI | I have been with guides who have told me the best running jerkbaits, reef hawgs & suicks, are the waterlogged ones. Also heard of folks purposely soaking their wood jerkbaits in buckets to get them waterlogged. They are not concerned about paint chipping or cracks. For them, its more about the baits' action than their paint jobs !

Posts: 416 Location: Madtown, WI | Can I ask why epoxy is necessary on wood baits? I know they look nice and shiny but doesn't it just create a durability issue? I guess I can understand why it helps on topwaters, but it doesn't make sense on any other baits.
