An awesome picture of the fish to come!

~ An Artist and His Canvas ~
By Sam Ubl

Time stood still for a moment as Ryan worked that fish through at least a dozen dizzying boat-side revolutions. With James at the stern and me at the bow, he must have felt like he was on center stage as we stood motionless, watching, waiting. It’s times like this you store in the memory bank and remind each other the following year. Its times like this each second feels like an eternity, yet you lament when it’s over as it all went by too quickly.

It started with a lazy follow, low and slow. The wind had subsided out of the North West and for once you could feel the sinking suns last warm breath. The colors cast a luminous glow across the surface, a spectacle anyone could appreciate, anyone but Ryan that is. From his angle, there was little difference than those eerie eights you write in the darkness of night. I recall coaching him with whispers, “A little wider, a little wider. She’s too big to turn that tight.”

“I can’t see her!” Ryan muttered. “Is she still there?”

“She’s right on it, speed it up, she’s right on it!” I replied quietly, yet with angst.

I caught my last glimpse of her right before she exploded on Ryan’s Suick. “She’s on!” Ryan Exhaled, as he loaded up his rod.

That’s when the time-out ended. It was like pressing pause in the heat of a battle scene in a movie, taking a break for a moment and pressing play. Everyone moved in sequence as if it were a planned ordeal. Ryan moved to the bow of the boat, loosening his drag as he went. James, who was closest to the net, extended the handle and moved to the middle. I grabbed the camera off the steering console and retreated to the empty back. Moments later she was in the bag and our high-fives could have been heard across the quiet lake.

A whole evening dedicated to this single moment. An instant amidst hours, yet enough to tell a story that will last a lifetime.

I think what you write is great. Too bad some people just have no respect or appreciation. If some of you want, you can attend my kindergarten class so you can learn what good core values are. Or you can get in the ring with Sam. Good luck with that. Yes Sam, keep them coming!

Says "guest" with two tons of irony hitting him in the head as he clicks the submit button...

Nice story Sam.

I enjoy reading the stories and appreciate you sharing them because I am one of those poor saps that wishes he had the opportunity to get out and fish a lot more.

You can always cut and paste a blog if you want. We can choose or not to choose to click on the thread or not. I think it is cool that you share.

You can also choose to click and read the story. Responses to his other ones ask for more, so. Anyways, I like this one too, felt like I was there.
