Location: SE Wisconsin | An awesome picture of the fish to come!  ~ An Artist and His Canvas ~ By Sam Ubl Time stood still for a moment as Ryan worked that fish through at least a dozen dizzying boat-side revolutions. With James at the stern and me at the bow, he must have felt like he was on center stage as we stood motionless, watching, waiting. It’s times like this you store in the memory bank and remind each other the following year. Its times like this each second feels like an eternity, yet you lament when it’s over as it all went by too quickly. It started with a lazy follow, low and slow. The wind had subsided out of the North West and for once you could feel the sinking suns last warm breath. The colors cast a luminous glow across the surface, a spectacle anyone could appreciate, anyone but Ryan that is. From his angle, there was little difference than those eerie eights you write in the darkness of night. I recall coaching him with whispers, “A little wider, a little wider. She’s too big to turn that tight.” “I can’t see her!” Ryan muttered. “Is she still there?” “She’s right on it, speed it up, she’s right on it!” I replied quietly, yet with angst. I caught my last glimpse of her right before she exploded on Ryan’s Suick. “She’s on!” Ryan Exhaled, as he loaded up his rod. That’s when the time-out ended. It was like pressing pause in the heat of a battle scene in a movie, taking a break for a moment and pressing play. Everyone moved in sequence as if it were a planned ordeal. Ryan moved to the bow of the boat, loosening his drag as he went. James, who was closest to the net, extended the handle and moved to the middle. I grabbed the camera off the steering console and retreated to the empty back. Moments later she was in the bag and our high-fives could have been heard across the quiet lake.
