A friend of mine bought a new Mercury 50hp last year, and now it is screeching at low/trolling speeds. Sounds like when a belt is sticking/screeching on a car. Dealer says they are aware of the problem but unable to find a fix for it, or even what causes it.

Anyone else had this problem, and if so were you able to find a solution that fixed it?

Go to another dealer. It is probably still under warranty and should be taken care of.
