Can you use zip ties to tie flashoubu on to a coil? Or can you tie them on too something else instead of a coil?

 Thanks!

i have wondered about using small zipties for flashaboo or mariboo also...as good as thread? seems it might be faster.

I use both. I tie them on with thread and then zip tie them for added security.

I used zip ties with Flashabou last season. I used them to tie flashabou to coils or just directly to the wire. So far, I have had no problems with the zip ties coming off or the flashabou working its way out.

What works better for you, tie it directly to the wire or to the coils? It kinda seems like it would fall off if its tied directly to the wire, but I have never tried it.

You can buy skirt bodies that are designed to hold silocone skirts. Buy some bands designed for this to hold the skirt onto the skirt body. you will also need a handy little tool to open the band. after the band is opened use a hook formed from the bucktail wire, pull the flash through the band. release the band at the center of the length of flash and you have a flash skirt. load it onto the skirt body by pushing the rubber onto the skirt body. then put a small zip tie around it and snug it tight. you are all set. it is very quick and very easy. have been doing for three season and never had an issue.

Note---experiment with mixing colors of flash and if you really want it to be like a dcg, include a good amount of 'clear' flash as it is stiffer and provides more body to the skirt...always use the mag flash and the thinner stuff gets sucked up into the clevises.

Good luck and pm me for more

Both methods work good for me. The Flashabou will not fall off if tied directly to the wire. I use a coil if I want just a little more weight to run deeper. Make sure you add a weight to your bucktail. I use a 1/4 oz egg sinker and it works perfectly. I have also used larger sinkers to make them run deeper. Keep experimenting and you find exactly what you want and end up with a tackle box full of bucktails for relatively no cost and very little time making them. I think I am up to about 35-40 now, I just keep mixing Flashabou, tinsel, blades, weights and other materials to get something different everytime. Also, make sure you get a pair of round nosed pliers, they make life so much easier for bending the heavier wires.

Have Fun

You want to tie to a coil not the wire. First reason is it looks much better on a coil. Look at the surface area of the wire compared to the coil. The coil will hold more material. Another reason to tie to a coil is so that you can re shaft your bucktail. If your wire gets bent bad, you will want to re shaft it. If you are tied directly to the wire and this happens, the tail is junk.

I started working with magnum flashabou this winter after tying marabou for 13 years. The mag flash is very easy to tie. Cowboy's system would work fine but the brass collars are pricey. I use the brass collars for silicon, I tie marabou and mag flash on a coil. I wouldn't use zip ties, it looks to tacky for me.

I'll try to remember to take a picture tonight and post my flash tail.

Few different ways to skin a cat....here is the link where I found the best pricing on skirt collars....you have to call and tell them what you want and place phone order....that is what I did...I believe they indicate minimum bulk order in their paperwork, but if you call they will work with you.

It takes twenty seconds to tie flashabou with thread onto a coil. A coat of epoxy or head cement on the threads and you're good to go. I've tried zip ties and wasn't impressed. You can only get them so tight, and then you're depending on a tiny little lock mechanism to hold the thing together. I've had pike release zip ties on some silicone skirts before. Just not worth the time savings if you ask me. I think the ideal fastener would be a giant crimp sleeve.
