I'm thinking of grabbing a new Abu 7000i C3 reel for casting bigger cranks and cowgirls and stuff like, but was wondering if anybody has one and what their opinion is on this reel?

If you fish everyday... Make that every week - Save your money and buy a sturdier reel. I love the Abu 7000i C3, for the day it lasts. The new reels are just not tough enough to handle heavy fishing. On a recent sturgeon trip, my buddy blew out the drags on two brand new 7000's. If your heart is set on them, buy three, because you'll need them. You can buy a Daiwa Saltist, Shimano 700, or several other sturdy reels for the price of what a set of Abu's will cost you. I really do love them though, while they work, they are awesome! But right now I have literally a 5 gallon bucket full of them that are busted. If they could only make them as durable as a shimano, I would go Abu 100%.

YOu blew the drag on two 7000's? Sorry but I'm not buying that unless you did something to the drags, I've never seen one of the new 7000's that had a drag problem. For all the bad talk about the 7000's the return and defective rate on them is very small.

I was the guy fishing with Jerry and It's true each of those 7000's only lasted one fish, one hookset actually. I may have had the drag set too tight and set the hook too hard but I still don't think I really set the hook that hard. I think the problem was more in the gears then in the drag, but either way those reels were toast and there is no excuse for those reels failing. I returned mine and Gander was good about it and exchanged it no questions asked. Those were actually the third and fourth 7000's that I have had problems with. Each of the last two years I bought a new 7000 before the season started and I had both in to Abu Customer service before the season was over for complete reel failures of one kind or another. One of them made it from MN Muskie opener to mid August the other from MN opener to end of June. Customer service was great though and in both cases they sent me a new reel within a week. Either way three strikes and you're out or in this case four but I'm pretty sure I won't be buying any more 7000's.

I own one of these reels. I haven't had any of the problems everyone else has, but one complaint about the reel is the physical size of the reel. The reel is so big it is uncomfortable fishing with for a long period of time, and I don't feel as comfortable making a hookset while palming this reel opposed to my 6501 C3's.

Reelman, do you have those numbers?? Just curious as to if you're a repair/warrenty guy, or if you work at Pure Fishing/Abu? It seems you truely don't think there's anything wrong with the new 7000's.... but couple dozen of us that have perviously posted on the issue, will assure you there is.... we're not all liars.

yes, reelman is a rep for Abu/Pure Fishing.

please limit your comments to your specific personal experiences. it's helpful to everyone if people describe both their positive and negative experiences with a product, again in specific individual terms.

non-specific bashes of any item or company are removed for obvious reasons, and i've already had to do that a few times in this post. it's better for everyone if a post can discuss something productively (good and bad) and the thread can keep running.

Reelman, if you are associated with Abu directly, I want you to know, for what it's worth, I am not Anti-Abu. As you can see in my photos below, I love them, and have been buying them by the bucket full - No pun intended - (even though every reel in the bucket needs repair) I have been searching for one that lasts more than one season, and haven't found one yet - Scratch that I have. I have one my dad gave me, that he used from the early 80's. It is an old smaller model 5600 I believe. I'll have to look. I don't use it regularly though - Maybe twice a year on a pike trips. Anyway, PF and Abu do have great service, but when it comes to the reels, they need to improve durability, or at all future musky expos, they will end up on the fire sale rack for $70 and forums will continue to respond negatively for the most part. I think one of the major issues is listed in the bottom photo.

The fact that they are made in China isn't the problem.

The problem is the fact that they refuse to fix problems that they know they have. My last post got deleted so maybe this one will stay up.

I haven't found a Garica to last me more than 10 days of fishing.

The fact that they are made in China isn't the problem.

Maybe that isn't the total answer, but when they were made in Sweden, using bushings rather than bearings they were bulletproof - Look at a track record of some of the industries greats who go to China to save a buck -

Diamond Back Rods - Since they went over rods are snapping constantly.
Musky Innovations Mag Dawgs - Went from totally durable to heads ripping out on first casts to brand new exploding dawgs at first fish. (The new pro dawg rubber is awesome)
Fig Rig rods - See DB for identical answer.

I know some companies have pulled out of their china deals and are on their way back to the top - or have remained in china and are working to solve quality control issues. But never the less, the inexpensive craftsmanship that china offers, masks the inferior quality of the products they produce, and that's what has happened to Abu Garcia. It is a shame.

China can make the product good, Garcia isn't demanding it from them.

Look at all the other stuff made in China that isn't junk or breaks.

The factories in China can and will produce items to a very high level if you insist on that kind of product. Musky Innovations didn't insist on hard rubber, Diamondback didn't insist or field test their new rods as much as they should have. China can and does produce many many many great products, because that is what the companies insist on. Sure they will have to pay more for a high quality product, but that's obvious. When you make reels that you know are going to break, that is a problem. Insisting on higher standards and higher quality should be looked at.

I have several 7000's, and the newest is one from the early '90's. For those who believe the quality has declined when did that happen? I think all of mine are made in Sweden and still going strong... not silky smooth mind you, but powerful and durable. Still, with everything I'm hearing about the new ones, my next reel will be a trinidad.

Reelman, it's obvious from your posts that you know reels, and aren't just a paid mouthpiece. Has there been any change in the tolerances or grade of materials? What is the most common failure on a 7000? I don't think a $130 7000 can or should be compared to a $350 calcutta. Do you think abu garcia would see any interest in new top of the line 7000-sized model that falls in the $250-300 range?

Reelman,
I have sent you a pm as to not cause any trouble on the board or be seen as brand bashing. I also would like to note that I have had no problems with the old version of the 7000 (push button and no IAR bearing).

Jsndag, I was commenting on you saying that the drags went out on your 7000's. I will stand by and say that Abu has one of, if not the best, drag systems out there. When I hear somebody say that there drag went out I really have to question that because quite simply Abu drags just don't "go out".

The entire 7000 has changed since the push button styled ones of the late 90's. They are now made with a lever instead of a push button as most of you know. The clutch system has also changed accordingly. Neither of these have been any issue. The one item that I see on the majority of the returns is the anti-reverse going out, normally in cold weather. This is due to the grease in the anti-reverse bearing not working so good in cold weather. Abu has changed the lube in them and also added a standard style anti-reverse in addition to the instant anti reverse so that even if the IAR goes out in cold weather there is still the standard style there to get you through till it warms up.

If you go into a tackle store and look at returns you will probably see more 7000's then the big reels of other brands. THe reason for this is because they sell 10X the amount of 7000's as they do of the other brands big reels yet I don't see 10X the amount of other brands defectives. And yes ALL the brands have defectives and us musky guys cause most of them! I'm not picking on the Calcutta TE as it's a great reel but you will see enough of them in the defective pile also and they only sell a fraction of TE's compared to 7000s. You will see more Chevys in the garage than you will BMW's but a big part of that is because they sell a ton more Chevys than BMW's.

If you have a problem with an Abu I think just about everybody here knows that Abu will take care of you no questions asked.

on all my 6500 - 6600 I have added the old brake plate that has the anti- rev pin and added the anti-rev pawl with the anti-rev bearing, so all my ABU's now have Dual anti-rev in them, I wonder if you can do that with the 7000's ????????
