Search continues for apparent drowning victim
Associated Press

HAYWARD, Wis. - Sawyer County sheriff's divers will search Lake Lac Courte Oreilles (lah-coot-ah-RAY') Wednesday for a man who apparently drowned while spearfishing.

Sheriff James Meier says divers will borrow underwater sonar equipment from St. Louis County, Minn., as they attempt to find the 44-year-old man.

The Department of Natural Resources is assisting in the search in what it says could be the state's first spearfishing-related fatality.

Sheriff's officials say the man was spearfishing with a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old Saturday when he fell into the lake. All three are residents of the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation.

Spearers have "been around Anchor Bay out past Goose Point and along the shore", says a lake resident. "Ice was a memory as of the 17th of April." -Same source

So what's the story of the two teens with the man? Were they on shore or in a boat? What was done to help the man immediately after falling in? Wish the loose ends were tied.

When the boat capsized, he encouraged the younger two to swim hard for shore and not to give up. Unfortunately, he did not make it along with the other two. They were spearing during some extreme high winds.

I heard the winds were intense. That is seriously one sad story. . . Now I wish the loose ends hadn't been tied, but thank you Mittlestadt for the input.
