Given the # of posts I’ve read regarding your love for jigs and creatures, I thought it would be good to ask you a few questions as I try to get more confidence in this technique. When jigging:
1. What kind of line (I assume braid?) and lb. test do you use?
2. What size jig/jighead do you typically use?
3. What style and size of creature do you typically use?
4. What size and gear ratio of reel do you typically use?
5. What rod length and action do you typically use?

Location: Racine, Wi | Jim's another guy that can answer some jig'n questions as I know he's pretty good at it too. (Makes some killer creatures as well as shown above).
As a note, I think Steve uses mono and not braid when jigging. I know his chats go over the reasons, so I'll let you read that. Give it a shot though, you'll be surprised at what you can get on a jig. Especially on pressured waters. I always have a jig ready to rock in May. |

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | Steve put on a great demo and discussion on jigging at the Cap City Muskie School last month, he convinced me. I like his approach and his candid talk. I know he uses a proto type rod, 7'6" MHF. He also stated to start out with mono (17#) your first year and then advance to a no streach line as your ability grows.
He convinced me, I have ordered jigs, creatures, bought line and ordered a rod, now all I need to do is go use it all.

| It is the main technique I use to fish muskies now, it is really great once you get the feel for it...Thorne's has some really great jigs as well.... |

Location: SE, WI. | I kind of get a kick out of this post, because we are all responding but the guy that was asked LOL
But I feel the biggest reason guys loose interest in jigging is because of Confidence and Patience. Once those 2 are accomplished you will catch many fish, and Bonus fish...pike , Bass, walleye also.
As we age, jigging seems to just start to fit into our arsenal as a good way to relax and catch fish........ that most people won't.

I know you use a proto-type reel, but over all, what on todays market can you compare it to? Just curious as I am setting up a creature rig and could use the help.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Any high speed spinning reel in the MH category will do a great job. I like the spinning reels rated as 'heavy bass reels' the best, larger spools means more line pick up per turn of the handle, and the drags work well if one gets past my back-reel. |

1) 17# mono, last year went to superline. 35# is plenty. 50 works.
2) 1/4 ounce in shallow water, 1/2 ounce in the ten foot range, 5/8 ounce in deeper water, and 1 to 1.5 ounce on the rocks, but that's a swimmer head.
3) Most of the Creature bodies I use are about 6" long.
4) Heavy Bass action. 5.2 to 5.5 to one, I think.
5) 6.6' to 7.6' Medium heavy or Heavy action 'Bass sticks get the job done nicely. |
