| I've got a really good working suick that I have a hook problem with. It has the original hooks on split rings. Twice last summer and once this year I've had a BIG fish hit it and completely straighten out one of the hooks on the initial hit. The fish hits, there's that split second feel of the fish and then nothing. I tried to put 5/0 VMC hooks on but the action is less erratic. Any ideas?

| Buddy the 48.5 I caught just trashed the hooks on my suick also, best advice is set the hooks good then don't over horse the fish. I tried different hooks and wasn't happy with the action eather. Should try different styles of hooks when I get some free time. Any one have any Ideas? |

| What lake where you on?
Try a different lake with smaller fish.
Seriously now, how tight is your drag set?
I know guys who crank the drag as tight as they can for a good hook set. Personally I think there are more negatives then positives with a tight drag. Ever tried fighting a big fish at boat side with too tight drag? Yikes! |

| I agree with Jomusky: it's probably your drag. The biggest hook I ever straightened was a size 2/0 VMC and that was on a huge catfish (probably about 150cm or more). Those grow big here to over 240cm.
I do think that the combination of short line, a tight set drag and a stiff rod caused this. Your case is the first I ever heard about problems with the suick hooks.

| Jomusky the drag on my reels is only slightly on the tight side , I know of a few people that crank there drags down tight and don't totaly agree with that approach. The fish that crunched my hooks did it on the hit or hookset because there was roller whitecaps at the time and I toned down the drag after I knew she was hooked good. I agree that to tigh of drag could cause failures in certain situations. This hook peeled apart, a bad weld or something. The hook didn't straighten out just came apart from the other two. |

| I have only had this problem on this one suick and only on this BIG fish. I've caught a 46" and probably 10 others between 38" and 42" on it with no problems. Its not short line hookset because both times it happened was on the end of a cast and just beginning my retrieve. It might be drag related except this fish is only on 1/10 of a second. I think it might just be a weak hook or something. I've never had a hook straighten out any other time with any other lures. I am going to put a new, same size, hook on and hope for the best. |
