Posts: 1270 | IN the musky market the only ones I'm aware of are the Penn INternationals.

I'm thinking Penn reels are made overseas now. They sold to K-2 Inc. in 2007, but were outsourcing before that. I hope I'm wrong, but the Made In USA label isn't on their advertisements anymore. No surprise really. It's too bad we can't stick a higher tariff on sweatshop manufacturing countries, but it's too far gone for such a simplistic solution at this point. We can't even suggest "Buy American" anymore. Oh well, no use getting started, I guess.......

Posts: 1270 | SOme Penns are made over seas and some are made in the USA. The International series are still made in the USA. I keep hearing "guests" talks about Avet reels but have yet to hear anybody say that they actually used one for musky yet! Or for that matter anybody casting a lever drag for muskys.

I'll be trying an Avet this year. I know it will take some getting use to. Looks like great quality for the price and I've always liked try different things

Ironic that the international series is the one made here in the US. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe a lever drag is used on a lot of saltwater reels. There is a lever on the right side on top of the reel instead of a star behind the crank.

Posts: 1270 | A lever drag has a lever that adjusts the drag instead of a star wheel. There also is no button or thumb bar to dis-engage the spool so everytime you cast you will need to slide the lever back all the way to the rear and then when you retrieve the bait you need to push the lever ahead again to the "set" position. If you do not push it all the way to the set position the drag will not beheavy enough and if you push it past the set position then the drag locks tight. Also the way the drag washers are on the spool on a lever drag instead of in the gears like on a star drag there is always some grag on the spool. Lever drags are great for trolling as they use HUGE drag washers and usually have washers on both sides of the spool. They are also a goog choice for long lineing life baits but I don't know of anyone that casts with them. If you go to the surf casting sites I don't see anyone talking about using lever drags. BTW Avets are great reels with a solid reputation in the salt water market.

I was thinking Avets were bass reels. Do they have any musky sized reels?

Posts: 480 | I use a Avet mxl 5.8 for deuce 10's. The spool release/drag lever are one in the same. With the lever all the way down it is in free spool on the cast. Push the lever forward following the end of the cast and drag is ready to set the hook. It took me about 20 minutes to educate my thumb to bomb cast but after that the reels are awesome. The power handle is huge and really comfortable. The ratio is almost effortless with #10's. The down side is I needed a longer rod to keep the bait in the water. The best reel I've purchased in years. Duff Thury

I've only heard good things about the Avets. They seem to be getting more popular for dbl. 10 muskie fishing.
