Subject: questions on the history and origin of musky baits

hey guys I was wondering if you could help me out I'm writing a story on the evolution of big baits used mainly for largemouth bass. It's hard to not take into account the influence that many musky guys have had over the years! Lures that date as far back as the Creek Chub Fintail Shiner that George Perry caught the WRB on look very similar to something a musky guy would throw.

What I'm looking for is the origins of plastic swimbaits, jointed fish like wood baits, big gliders, old saltwater baits that have been used for musky. Pictures and dates are a plus as well as any website links to collectors.

your help is greatly appreciated!

The first swimbait is credited to the K & K MFG CO. by J.D. Kreisser, June 1907. It was called the K & K animated minnow. Do a search with the info given and you'll find plenty. Heddon had one of the first if not the first plastic crank bait with its river runt but the early models were made of an unstable plastic and shrank/melted. I think those came out in 1933.

The first jointed crank goes to heddon with its "game fisher" that came out in 1923. This was also the first un-official sonic lure as the body parts clacked together. I have always loved the history of baits. There is a great book by R.L. Streater called "The Fishing Lure Collector's Bible" loaded with tons of info on baits and the makers history.
