I'm looking at modifying a few shallow invaders i have by addind a wire to the front hook loop and bringing the middle hook back farther on the tail. I've seen this on some baits but could someone tell me how to go about doing it. Pictures are a plus. Thanks

Cut a length of wire long enough to extend midway down down the tail section after loops are formed on both ends. It would help to have a round nose pliers to form the loops on both ends of the wire shaft. I like to use .051 S.S. wire. One thing that I've done when making this modification is to connect one end of the wire shaft directly to the first eye screw with a seperate split ring instead of the split ring that is holdind the treble hook. Doing this will allow the hook to continue to swing freely. Run it through the second eye screw first and attach one end to the split ring you just added. Then attach a split ring and your treble hook to the other end. Hope that helps you out.

here's a different modification you might want to consider. It's simple, just attach three split rings to the back hook and barely tuck the back hook in the tail. I was told by a couple of people that the wire method killed the action.

I make the wire modification for all my shallow invaders but one thing to consider here is that it does change somewhat the balance of the bait. I do not use .051 wire as suggested above. I use 174# leader wire which is plenty strong enough but will bend up on any hookup. With the hook another 1 1/2 back the bait will rise nose up slightly. I have used heavier wire but I have actually ound some of the baits will sink with the heavier wire.

What is anyone's thoughts on eliminating the front hook completely and just upsizing the back hook to say a 7/0? I have one where the front hook hanger is damaged beyond use, so I'm considering giving this idea a shot. Haven't tried it yet to test the action. But mostly wondering how it will effect my hook up ratio with just one hook.

Here's the method I use and a link to the site. http://www.lurebuilding.nl/engmodificatiestim.html

It's a great mod that really improves the hooking percentage. You'll find it provides more hooked ups rather than just loosing the tail.

one of the poorest hooking baits imo,... ever... I have seen some heartbreakers lost by guys in my boat tossing them..for years I never threw one as i didn't want to take the chances even though they do get big fish to eat...I did a mod exactly like Johnny-B above...good link JB...now I have a little more confidence in it...might even throw it a little more.. ; )

Thanks for the info. It seems some people have different ideas on how to accomplish this. I'll have to try them out and see. I've lost a couple fish on it and just wanted to try to modify it to get better hookups. I just don't want to sacrifice the action too much.

Shallow Invader is my best producing bait, most muskies on this bait. I've always removed the front hook and then upsized the back hook to a 7/0 widegap and I don't recall ever losing or missing a fish. I do T the hook as well.

This is one my top top producers, also. Never lost a fish, and never T'd the hooks. I do always stick the back hook in like momuskies, but w/o the extra split rings. Just straight outta the box. Sure would be nice if they rigged it up like a swimmin' Joe.

Another thing to consider is using a smaller splitring(#5 Bucher) on the front eye and that shortens the hook just enough that it doesnt tangle into the back hook hanger.

The smaller split ring up front is a good idea. I'll have to give that a try also.

Thanks for the tip. I've been having problems with that as well.

I have also put heat shrink tubing on the front hook to keep it from fouling with the back hook or the lip, but it doesnt seem to draw as many strikes, not sure why but it just doesn't for me anyway.

If you can make wire loops, here is another method...
