sled,

That's a great idea. But I think a lot of people would miss it due to the wisconsin driver who driving 58mph in the left hand lane on interstate 90 pull their camper.

John Skarie,

How is asking this ethics question insulting. No one is better than anyone else. Yet I've seen time and time again a group of great musky fisherman turn into a complete group of thugs. I've seen guys just like me ( who love to fish musky) loose every sense of decency and class just because they are fishing musky and only musky. God forbid you have a jig and minnow a be on the same hump they want to fish. I've seen two musky fisherman get the living crap get kicked out of them at the landing after pulling up to some guy that was jigging for crappie. They chucked their lures within inches of this guys boat. When he returned to the landing the two musky fisherman were waiting to teach him lesson for having the audacity to ask them "What the hell are you doing?". I caught this whole scene as I was pulling into the landing behind the crappie guy. Alone I might add. I could hear one of the musky fisherman absolutely ripping into this guy. The next thing I see is the crappie guy is on the ground but getting up fast. By the time I got to the dock the two musky fisherman were running for the truck with the Crappie man catches one and beats the living crap out of him. His big tough partner is in the truck with the door locked. Crappie man a 46 year old man from Janesville, Wis. goes to his mini-van and calls the police. Oh, the two musky fisherman. A 39 year old man from Springfield, MI suffered a broke right arm, broken nose and concussion. His buddy 48 year old man also from Springfield MI. was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. I pulled into the landing it was 6:30 and I think I left the police station are 8pm after giving my statement to the police. I don't know what happen to those two morons. But I can tell you this I hope they found great satisfaction in approaching Crappie man and teaching him their brand of ethics.
Personally, I think it was really cool to see the idiot that hit Crappie man getting the living crap kicked out of him. Plus a fine and a suspended sentence. Not much of a brawler myself I don't ever remember seeing someone hit the ground so hard and still have the ability to flap their gums. At least while he was still awake. Anyway, that story illustrates the high end of the stupid fishermans spectrum. But there are lots of others out there. Some people who don't know any better, those who have a lapse in judgement and those who are just idiots. Anyway you want to slice it doesn't hurt to teach, educate and remind everyone that sometimes you need to act like the bigger person. One of the smartest things my father always use to say " Never get in a pissing contest with a skunk. Your never going to like the way to turnout". Its true.

I agree on everything expect the boat launch thing.I see way to many muskie anglers beeping their horn yelling, cmon at the ramps.Take it easy ,some people arent physicaly as capable ,or just do not launch as often as someone else.I think patience ,and williness to help people at the ramp is what u should have put in your rules and ethics commandments.)b

Yep, take the time to help someone else at the ramp. Yelling or beeping your horn is not helping. We've all been the new guy at one point or another.

My add would be this...we all have our opinions, some good, some bad depending on what side of the coin you are on. Everyone should have the right to disagree but I feel for us all to reach a common ground on some issues it's imperative to understand who we are and where we are coming from. Make your points, but if you are questioning someone or something directly or taking shots tell us who you are. Anything else is cowardly IMHO.

So I guess mine is...
Don't be afraid to take a stand, be open to other ideas, and be accountable for your statements.

Sled - well said!

EA- I think your goal to establish a a set of ground rule's/ethic's for your MI club & MI is admirable. Obviously, a discussion like this on a internet forum will also be read by a lot of those new to the sport. Hopefully they will take the information/rules/ethics and apply them in their fishing activities, i.e., not just muskie fishing. Use the KISS principle, i.e., don't create a "101 rules of muskie fishing" - no one is going to remember all of them. I think you've already covered the most important in your first post.

I would remove the words "You agree to", i.e., it seems overbearing. However, I would also not expect everyone to have the "integrity" to apply the rules, i.e., comply with your "code of ethics". Integrity is something that can't be bought or sold, nor can you force it on someone, and it's value to one's self esteem is priceless. This is something that I try to teach my children & grand children.

Something my dad taught me- "Integrity is like virginity, either you have it or you don't!"

Have fun!
Al

My only add to this is that some people at landings do NOT want any help. I launch my boat 7-10 times per week and have seen it all at boat landings. About 50% of the time when I offer help I get told that they don't need any help.

You can't help those that don't want help.

If I had a nickel for every boat I helped lift off the trailer, after they didn't need help or wouldn't listen to advice on Palmer's landing...... OE is right, you can't help those who don't want it......"Look out for that rock about 1/8th mile out from the Ontanogan"......."Been up there a million times"........WHAAAAAAAAAP.

Dam moving rocks.

I'm done offering help. Most often when I offer help they get offended as if I am better than them, often translates into they are not ready to admit they need help. All we are doing when we offer help to these people is perpetuating the perception we are better than other's with our sparkly boats.

Let them do their thing and they will respect us more for it.

Yes, but you can offer. If the answer is yes, you made a new friend. If the answer is no, nothing lost.

tried to help a couple type-A muskie anglers on the ramp at Oneida ... "hey guys ... there's a rock right where you want to back off or power-load" ... only to get a response of that tell-tale smirk of omnificence ... followed by "CHACHUNK" and then of course a smirk and giggle from those witnessing.

when enjoying the splendors of the outdoors ... chill out

bein in a hurry or bein cocky usually results in spending money for something unplanned

just put a big sign up at say rockford stating simply ... "while you're up north try not to be a dumb-a$$" or something simple like that.

Sled...

I don't know what I want more:

A. To be offended by that statement, or
B. To start working that sign

Darn good idea sled. I think it could be improved by simply moving it just north of Madison on 94. You get to influence knuckleheads from two additional metropolitan areas for the same price !

Wisconsin State Trooper: "Sir, I lasered you at 81 in a 65, why the rush?"

Land O Linconer pulling a 620 with his Escalade: "The SkyView in Presque Isle runs out of pork chops early"

Wisconsin State Trooper: "Carry on, enjoy your stay"
