Posts: 406 Location: Stones throw away...finally!! | I've never actually held a 700 TE, and was wondering if there was a big physical size difference between the 700 and the 400. I need a reel for big plastics and am wondering how uncomfortable they might be to cast and rip baits with. Thanks.

Posts: 165 Location: Minnesota | I have a 700TE and I don't mind the size at all. They are a bit larger than the 400s but if it is too big to palm you can always resort to the foregrip. I use my 700 nearly all the time -- and once my hand got used to being stretched out a bit more it was cake (easy) to use for hours on end. yeah what curleytail said is pretty valid you really don't need 700 for plastics a 400 (TE or B), Luna, induron 400, and Avid 300 would work well. 700s excel at big blades and some crankbaits, but I don't typically use it for plastics Edited by dfree 1/11/2009 3:41 PM

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Not to change the subject, but do you really need the 700 size for plastics? I thought they were more for hard pulling baits like the big double 12s and such. I wouldn't think the 400s would get too beat up just by ripping the big plastics. I ran reels much less expensive than the Calcuttas all last year, and did a lot of fishing big plastics, and they held up just fine. Just looking to save you some money. For big plastics, the 700 might not be that much of an advantage over the 400 size. curleytail

Posts: 909 | I seen the 700's, 800's,and 1000 for sale somewhere and they said they were the same size as the 400! Anyone ever hear of this? Brian

The 700TE is significantly bigger than even an abu 7000. It's much, much larger than a 300TE or 400TE. It's even a larger reel than the Trinidad 16, etc. It would not be required for plastics by any stretch of the mind... I wouldn't see a need to use this reel for that purpose. The reel does not auto-engage (like a Trinidad, you need to flip the level to engage the reel after the cast). You do get used to it after a while. If you're concerned about the size difference it's definitely not for you.

I would say it is about the same size as an Abu 7000 Larger than a Trinidad? no It is definitely bigger than a 400TE, but it isnt that huge

Posts: 172 | I have a pile of Abu 7000's, a 700TE, and a trinidad 16N. The 700TE is definitely the biggest. The 700B is smaller than the TE (I think that is the reel Baldy has confused). I don't own a 400TE but do know the reel is a lot larger. For what it's worth... Edited by MNmatt 1/12/2009 2:34 PM

Must have been the 700B I was looking at
