They had some Dragon Claws for sale, and I bought mine naked. When they showed up at the same time as some 6" Lokes, I had to take a step back. Then I conversed with Tigger about what he had said about painting on lures that had been sealed with e-tex and more. So, anyway, after applying one coat and sanding out the imperfections, I now have 2 beautiful blanks that already have 2 coats of E-Tex, and I will use the natural wood grain as part of the pattern. The one with the fine, tight figure will be a Brown Trout. The other isn't as distinct, but I'll try to use the wavy grain to make a Walleye. I'll keep this refreshed, if I ever make it out to the garage to paint.

Hey Beav,
Did you seal them with anything else first? The etex will come off if that is the only thing that you used. It may take a little while, but it will end up peeling like an onion once it starts . Speaking from past experience

They were sealed.
I just got done putting another coat of eTex over the first layer of paint. The Brown Trout is going to be great with the woodgrain as a base layer, but it didn't work out for the Walleye, so after they dry I have to darken up the Walleye, and put a fine layer of scales on the BT so the grain will still show through. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the top 2/3 of the Brown Trout is nothing but woodgrain. Bothe lures have 2 layers of etex and the first round of paint when this was taken. Now they'll have another coat of etex that I'll let dry for 2 or 3 days, and then I'll put on the rest of the paint and then one more layer of etex for a final. I'd have to get some wood with some real dark, blotchy grain if I wanted to do a walleye, but the grain worked out great on the Brown Trout. I'll get some close-ups when the etex dries.

That piece of wood was begging to be a Brown Trout. It was like a gift from God.
Right now I am on a quest for the perfect woods with the densities for gliders and top-waters, and the wood grain patterns that will require very little paint. I'm getting one hell of an education in the charachteristics and workability of all sorts of wood from Asia, South America and even Africa. With any luck, I'll find some that will be able to be used.

Beaver, those are absolutely works or art! I thought the Walleye looked good the way it was, but that Brown Trout is simply amazing. Very cool stuff and thanks for sharing!!!

I'll let them sit a couple of days and then take them out to the shed again. The Brown Trout is going to get some see-through scales so that the wood grain is visible even when it's done. The Walleye pattern didn't work because there wasn't enough grain visible to use as a background. It disappeared after the first coat of some very light gold. I'll be on a quest this year for lumber with charachter, and make lures with less paint in the pattern, like the Brown Trout.
Thanks guys.

They both look awesome, but I really like the walleye. The way you incorporated the wood into the brown trout was amazing.

The brown trout pattern is amazing. The wood grain adds a new dimension to the pattern.

Wow!! , Nice work and very original patterns. I love that old telephone pole wood. They are cut from 1958 western red cedar. My wood man has anything you could ask for in types and grain. You are doing an awsome job with my blanks.

This website is the best there is as far a custom painters and lure builders goes. I have seen more great work here than anywhere else on the web. I am going to have to step up to the next level of painting and build some true works of art myself. I think the bait I will make these new custom patterns on will be my Titanium Lipped Deepthreats. I just got some feedback from my tester on Georgian bay and he is impressed with the lures performance. I am looking to fill part of the void left by Rolfs (Wishmaster) passing.

This new version features a White Cedar (from New york) Body but we are plying in a 1/2 inch oak board into the nose to keep it from splitting when it slams rock. The Titanium is indestructable and with the reinforced nose I think we have solved the problem of blowing the tops off of the lures . As many of you know Georgian bay trollers love to Bash rock humps at high speeds with deep diving large cranks. Baits like Plows,Hookers, and Believers are destroyed in hours sometimes minutes with this tactic. Also the cold water makes Lexan brittle and lips made from this break as well. Aluminum has a tendency to peen over and lose its original shape.
My hope is to couple my next level of painting with an indestructable design that catches big fish. So far the lure has survived Johnny Dadsons first year of beating the crap out of it. Only time will tell how long the nose will hold up to day after day of pounding rocks. I have named this new lure the Rock Crusher.

Once again, Beaver you are doing a great job on those baits and yourself and the others on this site have inspired me to step up to the next level of painting. You guys are truely artists. Kingfisher

Thanks for the compliments, though I hardly deserve them. There are other guys here that are as good and better than I, I just happened to get the right piece of wood in my hands and an idea in my head at the same time. Thank you for being willing to sell naked blanks to me. Many guys will not sell unpainted blanks, while others will send me extras and tell me to paint a couple for them.
I'm no Tigger, and never will be. I just don't have the eye or the skill for detail like he does. But at the same time, I never tried to make my lures look like they came from a taxidermist shop, how else would we have Firetiger and Neon Perch and stuff like that. You never know how each lure will come out, and that's why I'm going to try different woods and let the wood take me where it wants to go......I sound like I should be at a Doobie Brothers concert.
Thanks again for the compliments and the opportunity. Neither of those lures is done yet, so I'll get the finished products up here when I'm dome with them.

I couldn't take it any more, so I went out to the garage in 17 degree weather and cranked the heater up to 58 and put the final coats on the lures today. You won't recognize the Walleye after I darkened it up and added some Kameleon scales, and the trout now has some accents in the face and it too has a see-through layer of Green/Gold Kameleon. I'll put up some pics tonight, and the finished products tomorrow.

Beav, those are absolutely outstanding!

That Brownie is yummy! I WANT IT, I WANT IT, I WANT IT!!!! I’ll have to watch for you on a particular lake, drive over, bonk you on the head, and take it!

It would be a shame to fish with something like that, but it would also be a shame not to fish with something like that!
