Posts: 37 | I'm having troubles deciding which rod to choose between the st. croix PM76MHF or the PM80MHF ... Since I'm from Holland I cannot try the PM80MHF rod because it has to be ordered from the US. Only the PM76MHF is available in our tackleshop and it feels good, only fact is that at forums like this the 8 foot rods seems tobe much more popular. It wil be used for casting spinnerbaits, 12" bulldawgs, DC's. HELP!! Mark Edited by markymark 11/28/2008 1:46 AM

Posts: 2024 | I only have experience with the 8'0" so can't speak to the 7'6". The 8'0" will throw spinnerbaits and DCs with ease. In fact, it will throw just about anything with ease... except for (maybe) Mag Dawgs. Some might disagree, but the rod is a bit "whippy" for those types of baits. Not rated for anything above 3-4 ounces I believe, and the near 8 oz. of the Mag Dawgs is a bit much for the blank IMO. My vote would be for the 8'0", but would use a different rod for the Dawgs. Not sure if St. Croix makes a heavy power Premier series rod in that length, but I'd consider that as well if they do (maybe over the MH).

Posts: 501 Location: Norway | I'm with esox50, I have the 76 tho. I think Ive thrown mag dawgs with it, but I didnt feel very comfortable when doing so. The PM76H throw mags nicely, but I prefer to use my 8' Musky Innovation Heavy rod, I use it for just about anything, from Violent Strike spinner baits to Pounders. (If Im on a one rod outing that is) Michael

Posts: 42 | i float the new river in a kayak, so the ac70mhf works best for me. i really only use it for 6" swimbaits or bass sized spinnerbaits, but i like it alot. i just checked the sc website, and they're offering pm80hf rated for 2-6oz baits for $180. the pm86xhf is rated for baits in the 4-10 oz range for $200. you may want to check out the mojo bass rods as well. they're built off the same scII blanks as the premeire, but come with a split grip. the only mojo that would really come close to what you're asking about is the mbc79hf. it's rated for 1-4 oz baits and costs $120. i'm not certain where they're made though. the triumph line up has trm76hf rated for 2-6 oz baits for $120. it''s made with the scII blank as well. it's made overseas. personally, i try to buy american goods whenever possible. i guess what i'm getting at is that the mojo or the triumph lines from s.c. could be an alternative for you. they're made with the same blank as the premeire, but will save you $60-80 that can be spent on insanely expensive baits. patrick

Posts: 37 | Only few st. croix rods are available over here.. In holland we don't have musky's only pike. So heavier rods are rare here. Only choice for me is PM76MHF vs PM80MHF. But what is the difference in 4" of length? Mark

Location: Amsterdam | PM76MHF = 7foot 6inches = 225CM PM80MHF = 8 foot = 240CM So the difference is 15cm wich is about 6 inches wich for some rods can give a big difference. I did see a webshop in Norway selling Musky Innovations and Fig rig rods maybe ordering there is an option (altho shipping might be expensive). Im from Netherlands myself and also looking in to buying some new rods so either St.croix or ordering from abroad are my options. Pm. if u need info

Posts: 780 | Do pike in Europe follow your baits back to the boat? If so,I also would go for the eight footer. Easier on the back for figure eights. If not,the 7'6" is a nice rod that will handle most baits with the exception, like others said, the heavy plastics. Kdawg

Posts: 388 | I own both rods and for the most part prefer the PM80MHF over the PM76MHF in most situations. I own several St. Croix rods and this is by far my favorite rod. The extra length is a plus as mentioned above. The PM80MHF has more backbone than the '76 despite the fact that they are both rated for the same lure weight. The base of the blank is noticeably thicker on the '80 and to be honest I would rate it somewhere between a MHF and a HF in the St. Croix Premier lineup. It throws the 12" mag dawgs with ease, the flex that you get with the rod seems to help put more umph into the cast and I like the softer touch when ripping the lure. I have even used it to lob the 13" suzy suckers but it is a little soft for that. That said the '76 has some nice qualities. Small bucktails and light twitch baits are better on this rod. Also, once hooked, I prefer the forgiveness of a lighter action when fighting a fish, much easier to keep a good bend in the rod. Edited by Yake Bait 11/29/2008 8:06 PM

Posts: 401 | Have you considered a St Croix two piece? These two blanks below sound like they might cure all the troubles of shipping. They could be built to at least 8 feet and still offer you the opportunity of having it shipped without spending a bundle. 2M70HF2 Musky-Jerkbait/SW PM70HF2 7' 30-65 2-6 2 H FAST 0.655 11.0 4.3 2M70MHF2 Musky-All Purpose/SW PM70MHF2 7' 20-50 3/4-3 2 MH FAST 0.600 8.0 3.7 Just a thought Keith

Posts: 37 | Thanx allfor youre advice. I coulnd't wait for the 8' rod and I bougt the 7'6". I fished it today and trew the 12" dawg for at leest 6 hours without any troubles. Reason I bought this one is that i think it is a bit more versitile then the longer one. By the way, 8' rod is still on my list so perhaps it will be the next rod I will buy. Thanx all.
