I honestly don't know the answer to this, even though I do believe I think I know the answer, but I'll ask those that know more than me to either confirm or deny my thinking:

Is it possible to have an existing trailer that is currently NOT a swing-away tongue, converted into one that could have a swing-away tongue?

My thinking is that "no," it's not the smartest, safest, wisest thing to do due to the structural integrity of the trailer being compromised since it was not intended for that from the beginning at the factory.

We just bought a new house with a garage that is just sooooooo dang close to allowing me to get my boat in there for winter storage, but yet.....I'm just a wee bit shy of it fitting due to the current trailer set up that I have now: 1997 Trailmaster trailer.

There are things I can do within my garage to get my boat to fit...but..it'd take some work and it may or may not be worth the effort, I just don't know.

Right now I'm wishing/dreaming I had a trailer with a swing-away tongue and got to wondering if it's possible to take my someplace to have it converted into a swing-away tongue.

Fulton Trailer products make a aftermarket swing-away tongue that you can hook up. Hope that helps you out.

no problem - just cut off the hitch that's already on there, drill holes, and attach the swingaway - i've done two so far like that - most of the swingaways just screw in to the inside of the tow shaft on the trailer - i got my swingaway at Bass Pro Shops, don't know if the other ones are made this way but mine was a piece of cake both times.

Mack,

Good advise here, you can convert the trailer.

Yep. I've never done it, but heard of it being done, and have looked at the swing tongue conversion piece online. I think you might even be able to get one from farm and fleet.
I have a feeling it's fairly easy to do, but if you don't have some good saws and other tools I would probably take it to a metal shop to have it done. Shouldn't take a good place very long to do it I wouldn't think.

It depends on the trailer. Tuffy trailers "Tough Trail" can not be changed without some serious welding. If the side lengths of the trailer come together at the one point right before the tongue there is nothing to swing.

I also tried it with my tuffy, but wasn't worth the effort.

A good trailer hitch shop/welding shop probably can do for around $300(city). I would call the boat manufacturer and ask for the trailer department. I remember Ranger gave my guy a few suggustions before he converted my trailer.

Used the Fulton setup on my Shorelander, it was pretty easy to do and have had no problems. Dave

Hey Mack,

Take it to Schwartz's in Noblesville. They did an awesome job on my trailer a couple years ago...basically completely rebuilt it for a really reasonable cost. They could handle it easy.
