Location: Hayward, WI | There must be a few guys on here using these rods. Anybody have a detailed review of them? I have heard of them, but all I've heard is that they are "great rods" but not much for other details.
I would be probably be looking into an 8'6" rod mainly for casting big plastics up to 13" Suzy Suckers and Mega D's when they come out (Pounder sized), but would also be interested in how well they handle lighter baits like double 10's, 10" Jakes, etc.
How fatigue free are these rods as far as casting and ergonomics (balance, handle thickness, etc)? Do they have a flexible enough tip to fight fish well, but still have enough stiffness/backbone to really rip big baits back to the boat and give solid hooksets?
Finally, how much do these rods cost?

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I have a 9 footer and really like it. Great rod for sure. Me and Jason fish alot alike...we like ONE rod to throw every bait we own. When he comes down to Indiana with me in the spring it is scary how similar we fish....
These rods are great rods. You can cast pounders with them, or a smaller showgirl. I am a fan of thick cork like on my Pro Edge Rods, so I wrap some tennis racket tape around the cork to get it thick the way I like it.
Great backbone for hook sets, great for casting all day. I believe they retail for around $170.

Location: Hayward, WI | Thanks for the info guys. I might have to look into these rods. Seems like I saw them at one of the musky shows last winter. Might have to do some more looking into them. I'd appreciate more info about these if anybody knows anything else too!

is he or can he build them with the fat-cork? i've done the same as you with pipe-insulation and hockey tape and it works nice but would love one like keith used to build with the fat cork.
if you were to steer someone in the direction of a pounder/big rubber rod is this the one? i assume it's similar to the one lijewski did with MI?? also, does it have a firm or fast tip? |

I don't know that he makes these to sell but just sells his off when buying new ones. Like I said, I could be WAY off on that but that is the impression I got when buying one from him directly. |

Location: Hayward, WI | I may be wrong also but I believe the rods I was asking about in 2008 are not being made anymore. I'm sure they weren't made for a while but maybe Jason started up a new line I didn't know about.
I have the old 8'6 Hamer rod. It's softer than a lot of rods but a nice rod if you like that. It works well for casting double 10's. I like it for the 8 oz size Hardhead. Casts them easily and they don't have a lot of resitance in the water. It does a great job of keeping a nice bend when a fish is hooked and keeps them pinned up well. I have tossed Pounders with it but they always felt like a little too much for the rod. It will do it if you carefully lob them, but powering them into the wind is hard, and the rod loads a lot if ripping them back hard.
I didn't toss a lot of Pounders on mine but it works pretty well for Cowgirls to Mag Dawg size baits.
Jon, I never handled the Mark J. rods but my guess would be that they are a pretty stout, fast rod. The original Hamer is the opposite.
Does Jason have his name on some other rods now?

Location: minocqua, wi. | i've tried that rod-wrap and found it to be too tacky and as a result it digs into ribs and makes sides even more sore as a result (when ripping body-baits). i love the hockey tape, plus it's dirt-cheap. |
