| had a good weekend we boated two fat fish I caught a 49 and a half its unofficial couldnt get a good measurment two of us felt it was 50 one being me : ). Then same day we caught a 50 and a half which was true measurement. Hows everyone else doing this fall. |

Location: Fairfield, IA | Hello ..... I am new to this site and to Musky. I live in SE Iowa and am looking for local and Iowa musky waters. I know of Hazel Creek in Kirksville, MO and plan to go there in the spring [90 mile drive].
As far as Iowa goes, the DNR site lists, Brushy Creek, Spirit Lake, West Okoboji, Hawthorn, and Pleasant Creek. A guy that I work with is a hard fishing Bass guy and says there are some in Rathbun. Any other ideas on water in Iowa??
We are taking a week in June for Lake Namakagon [Bayfield County, WI] and then plan to make another trip or two with the son back to WI. More local waters would be a huge benefit.
Any help would be gladly appreciated.

The Ia DNR hasn't stocked Hawthorn for quite some time now. Those Muskie allotments were moved down to Lake Sugema in Keosaqua. I have heard that the Muskies are really developing well down there. I believe that is only about 30 miles or so south of Fairfield. I would try your luck at the lake before ventureing north. I have been wanting to try Sugema but have yet to convince my self to make the trek down there to fish. Back in late fall of 2007, me and a buddy of mine drove down there to check out their spillway system to see how well it was going to hold fish during high water. The lake is layed out very nice. It looks like it will fish much bigger than its actual size. The spillway system is very well designed. Meaning it was designed to keep fish in. Try your luck down there and keep me posted. |

Hawthorn was stocked up till 2003 and has mid 40" fish in it - I suppose the Sugema fish may be 36" by this year? Any of the lakes you mentioned are worth fishing except Rathbun - great walleye and crappie lake but few if any muskie (did get some tigers many moons ago but they are definately dead by now). 3 Mile is another lake you may want to try..P.S. go to MN not WI  |

| I had no idea Sugema had Muskies. They are not listed on the lake information. Where are the stocking reports on the DNR website? Can't believe that lake is stocked and I didn't know it. Sheesh. I deer hunt on the public ground around there!!!! My wife's Grandpa has a freaking cabin within walking distance!!!!!! |

Location: Land of the Musky | Hawthorn used to be great back in the 80s! I loved that lake. Trees all over and big bass and tigers. Any good ones coming out of Hawthorn anymore? Man, monster bass until it got known for good bass fishing and then it got over fished. |

Location: Grinnell, Iowa | Hawthorn is my local lake. It was a perfect little lake for Muskies. It made no sense to me why the DNR removed it from the stocking program. But then again the Ia DNR... Oh never mind. I have not seen or heard of a ligit musky catch out of that lake for several years. I use to fish that lake 2-3 times a week but did not fish it at all last year and only twice the year before. I did see a picture of a kid holding a musky in his front yard that was supposed to have came from Hawthorn but it was never confirmed and the musky in the picture looked like a mount. The lake now is extremely over ran with carp. The bass guys don't hold tourny's there anymore because the bass population is low and they have no size, the crappies are runts, the catfish are few and far between. If there are any muskies left in that lake, they are few but man they would have to be monsters. A great little lake that the DNR just gave up on. |
