So I'm planning on getting out fishing saturday and my trolling motor is still not functioning. I've got an e-mag with a 24 volt 80lb power drive. The power plug is marinco and the plate on the front is marinco as well. I've checked all power/ground connections to the batteries and they are clean and attached properly. The fuses are fine as well...I actually cut the old ones off and hard wired them but since have replaced with new fuse lines. The front plate has a Jump/Run switch for the rear motor and a interior light which functions fine....so that tells me power most be getting to the back of the plate and that the connections to the batteries are fine. (Unless this is attached to the rear battery??) I replaced the Marinco power plug and that didnt help at all. I also hooked the trolling motor directly to a 12 volt battery and it worked...a little slow but it functioned. Batteries are brand new this summer. The trolling motor worked one weekend and then stopped working the next. THIS SUCKS! Any help or suggestions would be helpful. 630.452.5216

The wiring goes from the batteries to the back of the Marinco plate. It's possible the female connection has some problems, test for 24 coming out of that panel. Pull the panel, check all connections on the back, and test all connections for 12V. Then plug in your motor and test the leads on the plug by removing the sleeve. Make sure you have a black/24 volt plug, and the wiring in pos/24/- neg/neg. If you are not getting power from the plug, but have power at the plate, it's either your Marinco female conntecion or the plug. Check the 'burn bar' in the plug for a dark spot, too.

The plug itself is brand new and is indeed the 12/24V marinco that came on the boat. The ground is plugged in the neg slot and the power into the 24V slot....just picked up a new one last night and hooked it up. Still no power.

If the interior light works on the front plate would that mean I can assume the trolling motor plug should be getting power as well? As you probably know the light receives power via short power cords in relay with the jumper switch from the main power. Additionally, my lowrance unit is using the same power/ground connections as the trolling motor and it works!!

Is it possible that a spider or bug got in the female end a is disrupting the connection??

I am not sure if this will help but I had some problems with my front panel as well this summer. I can get power from the batteries to the trolling motor but it will not take a charge regardless of where the switch is put. I even purchased a 24 volt charger figuring that if I have power to the trolling motor I could charge in the 24 volt setting . . . not so. I have a new switch panel that I will change out next spring when I mount a new trolling motor on the front. I will take the whole front cap off and replace everything. Until then I slide the batteries forward, disconnect them and place a jumper wire and charge them as 24 volt.

Hope this helps . . . . probably not.

Read my post again, and do exactly what I suggested, that will tell you what has juice and what doesn't. Look at the burn bar in the new plug, too.

Corey, if you have an onboard charger hooked up directly to the batteries, the boat electrical is no longer in the mix if the trolling motor is unplugged. Make sure you unplug the electric motor before plugging in the charger, and it will work unless the charger is bad.

Steve,
No on board charger, I use a stand alone. The charger behaves like it is charging but nothing getting to the batteries. Will change the front panel out next spring, hope it works after that.

Thanks.

Corey. Think of it this way...if power flows OUT of the batteries through the front trolling motor plug, it has to be able to flow back in through the same receptacle. Are you using a 12Volt charger and red plug? If you are using a black plug, make sure you have the hot wire from the charger in the 12 volt spot, there's 12 and 24 available on that plug.

Also, you need to understand what a Marinco plug does, it takes what is a set of two to three 12 volt wires, and through the wiring in the plug and the receptacle creates a 12, 24, or 36 volt flow. No jumper wires should be needed on that system.
