Hi fishermen and women,

This past weekend while fishing my waters in northern Wisconsin, I experienced the most unfortunate of events. Worse than anything I could have ever imagined besides maybe dying in a boating accident!

On Sunday October 5th, I was fishing in Vilas co. in the Boulder Junction area, lake-hopping and fishing multi-species. The first lake was fished for Muskies (skunk) and the second lake was for Bass (awesome).

At the second lake when my friend and I switched over to Bass fishing is when the unfortunate incident took place. Prior to launching out on Little John Lake (east of Trout Lake/ west of Big Muskellunge), and even before we got there, we threw all of the Bass gear that was in my car into the boat and put all the musky gear tucked away and hidden into the car because I didn't want all of it in the boat.

We made it out to Little John Lake at approx. 1pm and enjoyed a decent but cut-short 2hrs of Bass fishing. While working the water in the northeastern side of the lake (500yds away from landing), we noticed two separate individuals walk down and observe the water. One was an older guy wearing hunter orange colors and camo while another was some guy in a jean jacket. Both people were there at separate times sometime between 1:30-2pm.

After maybe an hour of fishing the region near the landing, we made a run down to the opposite end of the lake.

After about two hours of fishing, an older couple came across the lake motoring over to us at about 3pm, asking whether the "tan station wagon with the busted window" was ours.

YEP! We immediately knew something bad was up and the enjoyment of some good Largemouth Bass fishing we had experienced was now lost!

As we arrived to the scene, the driver side window of my tan Ford station wagon was busted into and completely shattered. With the large heavy rock sitting sitting on top and placed nicely onto my dashboard in hopes of possibly trying to make a statement, whoever the culprit was apparently forgot to steal all of the visible electronics consisting of radar detector, I-pod, and other gadgets.... Also, we couldn't believe that he bypassed the 5 large plano stowaways sitting covered in my trunk with hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of musky baits.. Rather than take those items, he went for my 3 Musky rods and reels, and my friend's one rod and reel combo.

COMPLETELY BUSH-LEAGUE AND MADE DURING AMATEUR HOUR!

Noted above, I think it was definitely the hunter who was wearing the camo and orange... With the four rods going away for a walk, it seems likely that whoever did this came by foot.

At approximately 3:45pm, a call was made to the Vilas county Sherriff and immediately an officer rushed over to the scene to examine and document. A police report was filed (# 08-010757) and information was given.

The items stolen were the following. . . . All of which was bought brand new over last winter.

Rod 1) = 7.5ft Shimano Compre (med. heavy 2-6oz) $120, and Okuma Induron 400X w/ power handle ($120)

Rod 2) = 7ft St. Croix Premier (med. 1-3oz) $160, and Quantum Cabo 30PTS casting reel ($160)

Rod 3) = 7.5ft Gander Guide Series (med. 1-3oz) $80, and 1968 vintage Sweden Abu Garcia 6000C (all black + power handle / reel was used since day-1 by grandfather, restored over winter, and losing this one hurts the most)

As for my friend, he lost a 7.2ft Shimano Compre with a brand new Abu Garcia 6500 C3. About $200 set-up.

Insurance, neither car nor boat, would cover this one to make it worth it. Trust me.

Keep in mind that I JUST got into this Musky fishing stuff within the past year and this is a huge blow for me personally because it's all gone... Everything I saved up for and went out of my way to buy is lost and no longer to be. No more rods, and with the plethora of baits I have here with me, I have to do this all over again and spend so much unnecessary money again for some fish that I spend maybe 10-20 days a year for. . . . . . Kind of makes me just want to give up and quit this kind of fishing, but because I frequently vacation in "musky country", I can't!

I realize that there is really nothing much I can do regarding this vandalization incident as well the stolen rods and reels, but as a fraternity of anglers, I feel it would be proper to at least spread the word regarding this incident. . . If you have the time, maybe keep an eye posted on Ebay or Craigslist, look around at the area baitshops throughout Vilas and Oneida co., check the classified ads sections of newspapers in Vilas and Oneida co. to make sure whoever did it isn't out to make a profit. Last but not least, it'd be good to watch the other area boat landings so that these occurrences would no longer happen.

It's unfortunate and an unlucky break.

What happened is completely unfair, and have not smiled in 3 days, and I am now trying not to look forward to a long winter in which I will be turning poor from trying to re-stock and replenish my arsenal of Musky rods and reels.

Not asking for sympathy or get-well cards, nor for free gear or any kinds of deals. I just want to inform everyone that this shouldn't happened and it's a joke that it even did at such a great place and cool area for fishing.

Thanks.

Andrew

Nothing feels worse than that. I hope someone finds the @#$&*!!!!

I had almost the same thing happen to me almost a year ago to date. Except we were at the bait shop and when we went back to the truck most of our rods and reels were gone.

Setup a search on eBay for your key items for keyword searches. Lot of idiot theives will wait about a week or two and then on eBay it goes and many get busted.

Hey Andrew,

PM me, I have a rod and reel combo you can use this fall. I'll be out West so it will just be gathering dust. Hate to see someone strapped for gear, had some old-time guides help me out from time to time when I was short on 'stuff'. I can get it to next time you're in Minocqua. Will probably cost you a beer or 2

Sorry to hear that. You work so hard for these things cause, as we all know, fishing is an expensive sport, then some idiot thinks they can do it the easy way. Shame. Hope you find them.

Same here, I have an outfit I can part with for the fall. I have several, don't need 'em all. I'm in Rhinelander, so next time you go through, if you need a rod and reel, stop on in.

Same happened to me in GB last fall. Cops finally caught the little %^$^ers, but I'm still out on a lot of cranks I made. Watch ebay like others said that's how these guys were caught. Hard to see happen in Boulder Junction; are sure it wasn't someone you knew?

Man, that sucks. But you see how our little muskie community comes together to help, that's gotta feel good.
I can only imagine the thief would try to see those, can you imagine the bad bad mojo from trying to catch a fish with a stolen rod/reel? He's in for some painful hand hookings (and arm, leg, crotch), short fish and lost-at-the-net days. good luck, m

Thats too bad. Same thing happened to esox50 while on a trip up north. They ended up having to replace everything they had.

I had a rod and reel stollen OUT OF MY HOUSE (new Calcutta on a brand new 8ft Compre) this year by a painter. Well, he got away with it since I couldnt prove anything. Guess we shouldnt have had the painters in with no one to watch...

Its good to see people willing to help out.

Lost a ton of camping gear in a similar way. Do like the guys have said, check ebay, craigslist, pawn shops, any bait shops that deal in trades. Criminals are generally pretty stupid and tend to slip up down the line. Good luck and keep your chin up. Good show by the guys offering gear. Musky fisherman are the true gentlemen of the sport.

I don't know...

1. they break your window with a rock and leave the rock on the dashboard
2. they forgo stealing expensive electronics, lures, etc and only take your muskie rods
3. you're from IL (IL plates on the car?)

Makes me wonder if it was really about robbery.

First let me say how bad i feel about what happened. This is a very unfortunate situation and the thiefs deserve to be punished. however i think esoxaddict may be on to something....

Yeah, good logic and I was thinking similarly to that... But we did see a hunter or two off at a distance walking and by foot, and the most anyone could really easily take by foot would most likely be the rods. It's another possible alternative.

I have FIB plates. Correct.

I also don't know either.......

Mr. Worrall and others, thanks for the overwhelming messages and assistance but my season up north in your area is all but finished. I appreciate the kind gestures of lending but in all honesty I don't think I could accept... If it's a loan, I cannot take, but if it's a sale, then I will be interested.... I do have one more trip left on the weekend of October 17-19 but it will be for closing up our house in Minocqua for the season... So really not much time for fishing of anything.

However, sometime soon and until spring and def. at the CHI musky show, I would like to purchase two Okuma Induron's, a Quantum Cabo, and try to find something close to that 1968 Abu Garcia 6000C (family heirloom) that is now gone.... Any help with that department of buying and replacing would be GREAT!

This by far I want back the most:

Disregard the sucker.....

Its yours if you want it. PM me.

bottom line is that you don`t leave anything in your car/truck that you don`t want stolen, take it with you and deal with it.When you get to your hotel or wherever your staying,UNLOAD,not just all your gear, but if you have a kicker motor that you can take off your boat,do it.When my cousin and I go anywhere thats what we do,we have too much money invested in our gear and don`t want it stolen,he even takes his kicker off the boat and brings it in at some of the places we stay. There has been too many thefts happening like this to take any chances,if you leave your rods in your boat, those locks can easily be broken too.I`ve even brought my suitcase in the boat with me,if it`s the first or last day up on a trip you might have that also, alot of landings I don`t trust, not enough traffic at some of them. It`s too bad that this happened to you, just be thankful that all of your gear wasn`t taken, one day those guys might just meet up with bubba, and then they will be sorry.

I have had some gear stolen from my truck while steelhead fishing in Michigan years ago. I had heard stories before I went out and I did not lock more doors. My rods were stolen, but I didn't have damage to my truck.

One thing that I now do is mark my rods and reels. Whether it has my initials engraved on them, my name under the flex coat of rods or a brush of nail polish on the reel seat or guides, I do it with all of my rods and reels.

I don't know if this will ever help me, but in the event I am at a swap show, I can walk up to any rod and reel and know within 2 seconds if it was mine.
