I'm sure this has been talked about some place but I didn't see it in the previous pages, but do muskies communicate? They must have some knowing because how do they know when its time to go find a female and spawn? Do you think they use body movements or what?

I've been wondering this for awhile,

Thanks,

Brett:

About the only "communicating" they do spawning is the males butting the females to get them to drop their eggs, and the females biting the males telling them to get lost, they're not ready! I believe the spawning act is instinctive.

Yeah thats kinda what I thought about spawning-pretty much just instinctive. So, do you feel fish can communicate at all? It just seems weird that with most other species including salt water fish all communicate so way or another, why wouldn't a musky be able too? Is this starting to go back to the post about how smart a musky is??????LOL

Thanks,

IMHO, I would say that Instictive territorial behaviors are also a form of communication.

I'll start by saying that I'm not a biologist.

I have read over the years that some species of fish communicate with each other by using sound, color, and scents. Of course we all know that whales and dolphins use sound to communicate. I believe that some low frequency sounds from whales have been proven to travel across whole oceans.

Some species of baitfish(minnows) use scents to communicate fear when attacked. If I recall correctly, I have read that some minnows, I don't remember which species, secrete a scent when their skin is punctured. For example a minnow is attacked by a muskie, when the muskies teeth puncture the skin of the minnow a scent is given off thereby warning other minnows of that species that danger is near.

Certain species of saltwater fish use color changes to communicate. I believe that sailfish "light up", give off a neon like glow when stressed. Others use color changes to indicate readiness to spawn,or to signal danger.

I don't recall ever hearing about muskies using any of these methods to communicate. But that doesn't mean that they don't.

Perhaps JLONG could look into this.
