I have a 5600 and I love the real its great for what I use it for but lately it hasn't been engaging. I can do like a full turn before it engages, it isnt all the time though. What would the problem be?

Clutch arm, I'd guess.

Almost always the clutch arm. You'll notice the little tab that catches the sprocket under the main gear assembly will have a worn spot. If not you'll need a little oil under the clutch arm where it glides against the reel body. Good Luck.

The problem is that if you don't know what a worn clutch arm looks like you won't even think it is a problem. Just buy a new one and replace it, I think they are only about $8. When you hold them side by side you will notice the wear, it won't be much. Don't engage the reel until the spool is stopped and you will probably never need another one.

I would clean it first, had the same problem with a C5 a little cleaning and some fresh lube and it is back in service.

Make sure if you get a new clutch arm that it is the stainless steel one and not the older chrome plated brass one.

I agree with hammy. Garcia uses grease that dries out after a short period of time and it causes the clutch arm to hang up. use WD 40 and a toothbrush to clean off all the old grease and use a high quality grease on the gears and the back plate. A lot of people will say to oil it but oil just runs off and you are left with no lubrication. Once the oil dissipates, you will have metal on metal and you will be more likely to wear something else out. Ask anyone I know about the quality and smoothness of my reels and they will say they all fish like or better than new. I use a grease called Lubriplate Special Marine Grease. Many marinas in my area use it for hubs and such on outboards. One man says that it holds so well in water that you can glob one side of the hub and reinstall the prop and come back at the end of the season and the grease is still right where you placed it. The grease has qualities that allow it to "bond" to the surface you apply it and unlike many other greases it will not sling off and all end up on the inside of the sideplate instead of where you want it. If I can be of any help send me a PM and I will be more than willing to help you out.

I wouldn't be too quick to replace the clutch arm. All my Abu reels have done that at one time or another and it was usually because they were sticking and not worn out. Reelman is right -- the chrome plated brass clutch arms do wear out faster. The nice part is when they wear out you can clearly see the brass showing through where the chrome has worn off. I would clean it and oil it, and see what happens. If that doesn't fix it, buy two clutch arms, and a worm gear and pawl to go with it. That way you'll have all the parts that typically wear out and be able to change them in the boat when they do.
