Here's my problem..I have a Minnkota 24 V trolling motor, the 4 prong receptacle crapped out so I bought a new one. Unfortunately there was no wiring diagram with the new one. It is a Marinco 4 prong plug, I hooked it up and had half power and figured it was only running on 12 volts. Tried a couple other configurations and get nothing. My boat was used and has four wires running from the batteries (not wired in sequence like I would have done it myself). My question is how should I hook these up to make them work? I was able to isolate each batteries connection and hook them up to the corresponding positive and negative and still have no power to the trolling motor. I reset the breakers and still nothing no matter how I hook the system up. Anyone have any suggestions what to try next? Thanks in advance.

When they go bad it is usually the male side connected to the motor wires. make sure you have the red wire on the 24 volt hole. The problem is usually the jumper inside the plug. Take the plug apart and see if the jumper is warped or black. Jim

Get a tester to be able to test if you have power getting to the location where you are having trouble. Once you have figured if you are getting power or not you can start troubleshooting your problem with some direction. I wish I would have bought a long time ago before I rigged up my LMS 520's and new trolling motor this year. That tester would have come in real handy had I had it earlier in my projects. I think the one I bought was only around $10. A pretty cheap tool that can help quite a bit.

I have the same set up -- 4 wires going to my 2 batteries set up in sequence -- make sure to follow each positive/negative pair to ensure that the pos/neg pairing are hooked up to each battery properly (i.e., make sure positive #1 and negative #1 is going to one battery and positive #2/negative #2 is going to the other). In other words, make sure that positive #1 and negative #2 are not hooked up to one battery and positive #2 and negative #1 to the other. I also have a 4 pronger -- it should have 3 holes: 1 negative and 2 positive (1 for 12v and 1 for 24V). The 2 positive holes should be marked 12 and 24 (hard to see, but they are marked) -- make sure the red power cord is plugged into the right hole (24V). If you are sure that all of this is set up, there may be a problem with the new plug you bought and you might return it for another new one.

Hope this helps -- I know how frustrating this can be!!!

Just to test the system I bypassed the connectors and wired the motor directly and am still getting barely any power on two fully charged batteries. Tested each wire for continuity and they are fine. Any other suggestions out there?

Maybe it wasn't just your recepticle, it could be you have blown a fuse or tripped a breaker. Start at the batteries and test each + lead coming off the breaker or fuse. Look for re-set buttons that may be out. m

I second the motion on a possible breaker being popped. A small amount of power will go through a blown breaker. Which, might be why you are barely getting any power.

1. What do you mean by: "the 4 prong receptacle crapped out"? Were you having the same problem, i.e., half power?

2. Assuming both batteries are good and fully charged. The first step in solving the mystery is to identify the problem, i.e., is the problem the wiring, the circuit breaker or the TM itself? What is the model # of the TM? Does the TM itself have 4-wire or 3-wire cable? What is the color code of those wires?

What is the color code of the battery wiring to the new receptacle?

f.Ex. Battery #1 Neg (-) = Black -> Pos (+) = Red
Battrey # 2 Neg (-) Black w/white stripe -> Pos (+) = Red w/white stripe

First disconnect the TM receptacle & plug.

3. It's entirely feasible that one of the circuit breakers is defective. The easy way to test them and both sets of battery cables to the TM receptacle is to load test. You can do this with an gadzillion candle power spot light or an old automobile 12V headlamp (bright headlamp). Disconnect all the wires at both ends and carefully connect one set at the TM end to the test light. Then connect the other end to the appropriate battery. Repeat for the second set. If one of them won't light the lamp or the lamp is dim you need to backup.

Take the lamp to the battery and hook it across the terminals, if it doesn't light or is dim, the battery is the problem. If the light is bright, the circuit breaker is the most likely culprit.

If you have a good bright light from both sets of wires, the supply circuits are OK and you're on to step 4.

Step 4- Verify the wiring interface (Marinco receptacle) is properly wired. If you don't have the original manual, call Minn Kota and get one or get a wiring diagram from them. Rewire the system to their diagram.

Step 5 - If it's still not working you probably have a TM problem. Did you remove the prop & check for fishing line. It's also possible that the TM controller may have been damaged from your earlier wiring attempts.

Problem solved! It was two fold. The old receptacle shorted out and the positive wire from the trolling motor had been damaged inside the male connector. Shortened the wires reconnected them an am now back in business. Thanks for the suggestions.
