Subject: Treating sunburn.......

Went out today.
Georgeous day on the Chain, nice and cool and sunny. After about 7 hours of fishing noticed I had a horrible burn going. I know look like a tomatoe racoon from my polarized. I have aloe loaded on my face right now and vaseline on my lips. Anyone have any good remedies for sunburn? I sure would appreciate it.

BTW- 1 follow, 1 fish just resting, caught a LMB twitching a crane. Anyone else hit the chain today? I think they are in a 2nd spawn or just lethargic as all hizell. Coolest temps were 57, 61 in bays.

Thanks

Dude, you can buy some Solarcaine or use what we do down here....a baking soda + vinegar solution. Mix a little baking soda + vinegar together and apply; at least try the vinegar if you don't have the soda powder...just put some on a washcloth + rub on...should help!

Phil, I think the best thing to use is a product called " afterburn " it is an aloe and vitamin E base gel. It feels real good and cold when you put it on and it also has medicine to help heel you faster. I just love the stuff I normaly forget about my sunburn within 24 hours. It also helps prevent peeling as well. [:sun:]

Loom for the stuff or some similar at your local pharmacie.

No probs dude! The stuff Rich posted on is good too; I use the vinegar stuff as it works almost instantly + I have it here at the hooch. If they don't have Bullfrog see if they have BioSun, another really good screen that is clear + no oil...[:sun:]

The thing that sucks is it was a awsome day and since it was cooler I didn't even notice I was burning. I usually don't burn either, so it was odd on a 51 degree day. Oh well live and learn.
Thanks guys I appreciate it.

Do what everyone else suggested, but it is VERY important to drink a lot of water. A burn of any kind severely dehydrates your body. Drinking a ton of water will help you heal much faster.

Also, watch for blisters. If some appear, don't freak out, just cover them with gauze if they pop. If you don't they can get infected quite easily.

Ditto on the AfterBurn stuff. Those other products like Solarcane will make your face peal like a reptile. I think vinegar will do same.

No way dude on the vinegar! The only thing that will peel will be your sinus lining[;)] Aloe based lotion will help prevent peeling but depending on the degree of the burn, some peeling is unpreventable; once the skin layer dies it's too late...the vinegar just eases the sting! [:sun:]

**Saw a dude w/ 3rd degree sun burn once in Panama...now THAT was a burn...had to lay on his belly + suffer he did...looked like the chef doubled cheesed his back/legs + slid him in an oven....can't remember what the medics did for him but it wasn't anything we discussed here! [:sun:]

I go with a bottle of Aloe Vera. Just spread it on every so often, and your burn won't sting as much. Put the bottle in the fridge to cool it down, and it feels even better. The scary thing is watch this stuff melt on your sunburn, but it feels sooo good.

I'd tell you to rub a painted BullDawg on your burns but I know this is your time of need so I'll just pass that one up and let Mr. Squarepants give you the straight skinny.

As for me, I'm off to go jellyfishing.

The BEST treatment is prevention!!!!!!!
I always have a tube of Banana Boat SPF 30 in the boat, use it year round, great stuff not smelly, greasy or sticky

You are not the first person to have a bait modification go bad. I know this certain guy named... ah... Frank. Yeah his name is Cra, I mean Frank. He tells me that he done a few things to muskie baits that didn't quite work out too well. On the other hand there are a few that worked out real well so keep on trying.

But no sunscreen... man oh man. What are we going to do with you? (Frank's been sunburned too so don't let me, I mean him, pick on you too much)

All I can say, is use sun screen. I used to use it a bit, but alot more now. Three years ago, my life long fishing buddy died from melanoma at 40 years old...major bummer!!

Sorry to hear about your loss. I always do wear it, just on those nice sweatshirt and jeans spring sunny fishing days I am not used to getting such a burn. Thanks everyone for all the help.

The great pourous one is right about the vinegar, saurate a towel with it and lay it across the burns and it will absorb the heat right away

For bad cases that we see in the emergency department we treat them with steroids and everybodies favorite narcotic Vicodin. Try some diphenhydramine (Benadryl) it helps with the itching and it will let you sleep much better at night. Use anti-inflammatories/pain reducer like Aleve or ibuprofen. You can actually take 800mg of ibuprofen every 8 hours or 400mg of Aleve every 12 hours. It actually takes over 24 hours to reach peak serum levels. Unless of course you have any previous allergies to aspirin or other non steroidal anti-inflammatories. Good luck.
