Was just out to the kennel-putting the dogs in & noticed moon rise must have been ~ same time as sunset.

So what do you prefer for muskies? Does it really matter for muskies? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Have fun!

Moonrise/sunset. That's when I caught my 50! Not real scientific but, I'm kinda partial to it now.

I got my best this past week betweet moon rise and sundown so could go either way but its my first sunset fish ever so I'll go with moon rise/sunset.

Last year I caught my personal best around moonset/sunrise. This year I caught my new personal best on sunset/moonrise.

Sometimes I like fishing the moonset period a little better because it seems like you have the "hot" period around moonset, but the fishing can remain good after that. Moonset seems like if you haven't had anything going all day, you better be on a good spot fishing 10 minutes before and 5 minutes after moonset, because that is when something WILL happen if it happens at all.

I think they are both good, just a bit different.

I should mention also. A moon period at any time of the day can be good. I have caught fish fairly closely correlating to the moon at any time of the day. Also, I would rather be out fishing with the moon down than up. One other thing, other factors can be stronger than the moon. Early this year, when the water was so cold I had my most action right in the middle of the day through about 3:00 PM, when the water was at it's warmest. One of my best days last year was when the moon was up. There had been a couple days of major cold front that moved in, which cooled the water off a lot in August. This was on a lake where the cooling temps of late August really brings the fish up shallow and makes them feed. This abrupt change REALLY got them up there, and it would typically have been a bad day otherwise. Moon up, cold front, etc. But, that water temp change REALLY made things happen.

The moon seems to be a more important factor when you have consistent, ho hum, non-ideal days to fish.

Tom Gelb wrote an excellent article on this topic in MHM about 1 yr ago. It was the best article I've read on the moon phases and after I read it I felt like I had a much better understanding of the how the moon phases effect fishing activity. He goes into great detail breaking down his success on big fish during the daily moon phases. I would recommend it to anyone.

I went out for 5 hours last night. Got to the lake around 5 and left at 10. Around 8:15, I had a low 30" or so hit a topwater and miss. Maybe 5 minutes later, I had a low to mid 40" musky hit and miss the same topwater. That was the only action we had and it was just as the sun went down and close to moonrise.
