I bought a Gander Mountain Guide series IM6 rod last October. It has been a pretty good rod up until I went fishing last weekend. I was trolling and I noticed my reel was a little loose. I thought it just loosened up, so I tightened the reel down again. As I was turning the knob, it was starting to get tight and then went loose again. It either stripped out or they don't put any kind of filling on the inside of the rod and it's caving in. Long story short. Took it to the store where I bought it and a young guy said he would have to talk to his manager. The manager came out and said that he would have to take it and have his manager look at it. Maybe 2 minutes passed and another young kid brought my rod back out and said they couldn't do anything about it. I was thinking at least the manager will come out and explain why they won't / can't fix it but I didn't even get that. I told them that I guess I won't buy any more of these rods. The only reason I posted was because I had seen a few threads awhile back about these rods. Thought I would post my 2 cents. I guess I will spend $100 on a good St. Croix.

Steve:

It was at the Gander Mountain in Columbus, OH. I guess I was just hoping to have a little better service than a high school kid telling me that they can't do anything about it. I guess I learned my lesson.

Greg,

You might consider posting your experience with them on www.gofishohio.com. There are several GM employees on the site who can tell you who to contact in Ohio to raise h*ll about this.

I thought that I had heard the St. Croix makes the blanks for Gander Mountain. Maybe I'm wrong but that is what I had heard. Anyone out there know?

Steve...I don't have a clue who makes the blanks for Gander Mountain but I do know a bit about rods and companies. There are not all that many manufacturers of rods so all retail stores with their own brands, whether it be GM, or BassPro, or Cabelas, contract out to the real makers to have their rods made.

I make this obvious point because even if St. Croix does make the blanks for GM these GM rods don't necessarily have anything to do with St. Croix's quality of rods. When St. Croix, or Loomis, or Lamiglas make blanks for another company they make them to that company's specifications, not their own.

Just a little food for thought,

St. Croix used to make the rods for Gander Mountain, but not any longer. They used to make private label rods for several outfits, but they're own rods are selling so well that they had to give that part of the business up. At least that's what the guys at St. Croix told me.

As far as who's making the GM rods now, I heard it was Berkely, but I'm not sure about that.

The kid at GM told me that their IM 8 rods have are made with St. Croix blanks. Of course he tried to sell me one of those. Thanks for the responses.

From someone I know that used to work there told me that the blanks come from oversea`s and that they are Southbends and many others! The Guide models IM7 7'6" are one of the best small bait sticks around and took one back to Gander(Wausau)and left with a new one WITHOUT A RECEIPT!I have never had a problem with anything there!
