What do you guys do when setting the hook on an 8: set the hook straight up, back toward the fish, or in the same direction the fish is going?

no expert here, but when the lure is just beginning to turn back toward the boat, I merely bring the lure over the muskie's head. It's easy picking for the muskie and he is headed away from the boat, which, in my opinion, allows for a better hook up even if he just nips at the lure, as he will bring his weight down on the lure. I guess that's when I lift up or toward the boat.

For what it's worth it kind of depends where I'm at in the "8" ( I do big ovals), if I'm ready and have the footing and sweep of the rod, I reverse my direction of travel. The thought here is to drive the bait further down in the fish's mouth, I'm pretty good at the boatside hookset with mixed results in ensuing fight ( I'm getting better at "freespooling"). Most of my "lost fish" are a result of muscling them right at the boat, not letting them get a little space to cool out.

ALWAYS SET BACK INTO THE FISH!!! watch the fish and after the strike set it the other way driving the hooks home.. remember that allmost all strikes will always be on the outside turns of the fig 8 very seldom on the inside straight....bill

muskydope is also right about free spooling them i alway do if from the strike so you can give them a little line so they are not throwng the hooks. heck you can use your thumb for better drag than the one on the reel i think in this situation.. also a thumbar on the reel is best for this..bill

Just landed my FIRST on a figure 8 yesterday seconds before it started raining as a cold front came in! Did exactly what was suggested above -- back into the fish. Got him! Not a huge fish, but landed a nice 38" that I'll never forget.
