Subject: What could of been done??

Hello everybody quick question. I was in Canada this past week and hooked into a fish that was 50” plus. After the fish hit my top water it white watered me for nearly 30sec which felt like an eternity. I buried my rod in the water till this stopped. Fish then charged the boat as the fish approached the boat it made a run to the right heading for the front of the boat. In doing this the fish started to do an alligator death roll. At this time again while in free spool I buried my rod in the water. I ended up losing this fish due to the line being cut! Not only did I lose a 50” fish I lost one of my favorite baits. One of the best top water strikes I have ever seen. Fish was a demon!!!

My question is what could if anything have been done to prevent this? I believe two things happened. One the fish eat the whole lure and got the line with its teeth. Second the fish rolled on the line getting caught in a raker, or a gill plate. I have never seen anything like this before. Thanks.

anytime you bury your rod in the water you lose the angle - IMO sometimes it's better to keep an upward force on the fish - with topwaters especially i play it really light, keeping the rodtip up and kind of let the fish do it's thing. i've hooked a few pretty spunky fish on the tip of the beak and done this and got them in the net. you can keep bass down by burying the rod, not so easy with the musky.

as far as the rolling, not sure, but keeping your rod up will angle your line away from the teeth, if you had the rod in the water with the fish rolling the line was probably right on plane with the teeth, would have been easy to get it caught in there and cut.

sucks to lose a big fish, i feel your pain, i'd have kept my rod dry but i wasn't there.

Thx Marc, I guess it happend so fast that the rod could have been above the water at the time of rolling. Other people said that there isn't much you can do when they roll. Like you said your at the mercy of the fish. Thanks for the advice. I sat in the boat for about 15min just shocked!!!

i prefer to see a loaded rod lower than higher ... putting it in the water with a fish wanting to come out of the water is not a bad thing to do ... otherwise just try to slow your visual and emotional state down (mind over matter). when they charge you it's just plain tough and without being with you even tougher ... there's a reason the bigger fish are tougher and she just won the battle ... tough loss but with each one you get more experience for the next.

the main thing you can do is to make sure your at your best with line and terminal tackle, get out there and try to repeat the situation and win it this time.

good luck to you and shake it off.

I think it is stricly due to the position of the visor, and the fish was in complete disgust that it was hooked by a visor wearing ex-sail boarding pontoon owner in a boat with a bright yellow stripe. Just my opinion

Not knowing what you are using are doing but maybe, Bigger line, bigger leader, check leader & line and re-tie more frequent?
It is usually our own fault, but sometimes it is almost unstoppable.

Loosen your drag or freespool the fish when it starts to run hard..This usually stops the fish from death rolling..Sounds like you pretty much did everything right, the fish just rolled past the leader and got the line in its gills..SUCKS!!

shawn, you said in your post that you believe that maybe the fish ate the whole bait and its teeth cut the Lin. Where you fishing with a leader? If so, what type of leader were you using? If not, problem solved.
