I've been wanting to get one of these for a while now and was wondering what you guys have and if you like them a lot? Also, what type of price range do you need to pay to get a "quality" camera that I can rely on for years to come. Any certain ones I should stay away from such as name brands.

Any answers will help,

Brett Carroll

I have an Olympus d510 2.1 megapixel camera. It is very easy to use and takes great pics. It is a bit over $300.00 bucks. the only draw back is that digitals are still pricey compared to regular cameras but i have no regrets because of the quality of the pics and you get to see them immediately.

I have 2 digital cameras. One is a Fuji FinePix 40i that is 2400x1600 resolution. I love that camera! The picture quality is fantastic as long as you realize that it's only good for "snapshot" type pictures. By this, I mean from one end of the boat to the other. It has a digital zoom, but not an optical zoom. But that's all right for me because I'm just looking to take pictures of happy clients in the boat. The thing that I like about it is it's small (slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes) and fits easily into the pocket of my cargo pants. It's always "right there" when I need the camera. The bad thing about it is "if you fall in the water, it's right there too" and gets wet. Digital cameras don't like getting wet [:knockout:]

While I was waiting for Fuji to repair the camera, I picked up a backup camera, a Sony Cyber-Shot 2.0 megapixel camera. The picture quality is pretty decent and I got the camera for $219 at Best Buy. Again, it's small enough to fit into my pocket and still takes pretty good pictures for the money.

I love a digital camera. The shots are right there for immediate viewing so you know if the shot is good (before releasing the fish). Also, because so much of my guiding business comes from the Internet, all of my clients have e-mail addresses so the pictures are "home" before the client is.

I have a Konika and a Samsung, both have been responsible for the shots onsite. Great tool!!

That all depends on what you will be using it for. If you are just going to be viewing the pictures on a PC, something in the 1.0 megapixel range would probably be sufficient. If you are going to be printing the pictures or need higher quality for graphics purposes, get at least a 2.0 megapixel.

Right now I have two cameras, both made by Fuji. I have a Finepix 1300 that is mainly used for when I go hunting or fishing. It is a 1.3 megapixel, and takes fair pictures. It is sized very nice for putting in a pocket or in a small place. I have seen this camera for as cheap as $139. I also have a Finepix 2800. It has all the features; MPEG movie mode, 2.1 megapixels, 6x optical zoom...... American TV has this camera for $399, I got it for $329 on the internet.

I have seen problems with the lower end models made by HP.

Sony also makes great cameras. The only reason I do not have one is that the media cards are not interchangeable with other makes of camera.

Also, if you get a digital, and take a lot of pictures - get a media card reader. No cables to plug in all the time, and it is always ready.

Thanks for all those answers! One last question.....who does make the best cameras? Is it Sony, Fuji, etc.?

Thanks again,

Brett,

If you go to a search engine, and type in "digital camera review" - you will get page after page of reviews to look at. You should be able to find comparisons of different makes, models, etc. You will learn a lot by comparing features.

Here are a few good sites.

Good luck

Brett:
Also, a guideline for printing digital pics is 1.0 megapixels for 3 by 5 prints, 2.0 megapixels or better for 5 by 7 prints, 3.0 or better for printing 8 by 10's.
You can go to many camera stores (Ritz camera in the Chicago area) and they have digital printers if you are like me and have only a mediocre printer at home (and dont want to use all the cartrige ink). All you have to do is bring in your smart media card, pop it in the computer they have, view your pictures and print only the ones you want printed. It is pretty cool and easy as hell. 3 1/2 by 5 prints are like 49 cents each. 5 by 7 prints go to like $1.99 each but i am not printing every picutre. Just another option with the digitals

OK, I would honestly say Olympus is the best. An Olympus 2.1 will take a ten times better shot than a Sony 2.1. I would highly recommend the C700 to anyone who fished only because of the direct view eyepiece. You have to remember that when you are outside that LCD will not show up good at all. The C700 is about $499 and worth every penny. The lens size also makes a huge difference. I used to sell them at Abt(electronics store).

The Fuji Finepix 2800 I have also has the "through the lens" feature, and I wouldn't recommend a higher end digital that didn't have it.

I would also recommend a good quality set (actually two sets) of NiMh rechargeable batteries.
