Got my first 'ski on the fly this past week...not huge, but not bad. 9wt rod, 1x leader, and 30lb tippet.

Is that an Indiana fish? There is a little lake where I have caught some here that the color is that striking.

Hey guys,

Well here's the story and the fly. My father had noticed a guy doing very well on a fly rod last fall. He told me about it, so I got him a 9wt outfit for xmas, and he gave me a 10wt for xmas(works out nice that way!). Up until this fish, largest thing I'd caught on a fly rod was about a 12" rainbow last fall...and that was my first fly fishing trip.

So broke out dad's fly rod and the below fly on last tuesday, and had 3 follows that evening. Next day took it out again and got the fish above. Cast toward a shoreline, stripped it in at a medium pace. I saw the fish following about 10' out, kept stripping, and then before I got to the leader just started twitching the fly to the boat. The day before one of the fish followed to the boat and I didn't know what to do(can't figure 8...rod tip too thin) so just twitched it. That fish flared it's gills twice under the fly and literally nosed the fly, then swam away.

So this fish, I twitched the fly twice boatside then just let if fall.....two feet from the boat I see the fish under the fly, S-curve up, flare the gills grab and go. Fight lasted about 8-10 minutes(13lb leader is way different then 80lb power pro). Finally got her in the net with much relief. So there's the story...thanks for all the comments boys.

Josh

Must've been a good weekend for it! I caught three on the fly on Sunday before Memorial Day. All on a 9 wt rod with a sinking line, 5 foot leader with a 10 in, 36lb steel tippet. All 3 fish were between 25-32", but nice to break the ice with for sure..

Oh yeah, as for the color. My father and I thought it was such a pretty and unique fish too. The area I caught it has very stained water. Not sure if that has something to do with it or not.

Here is a bigger/closer view of the color/pattern.

So even with my quick success, I really don't know what I'm doing yet with this muskie fly fishing thing....so I have a question for those who have done it before....

Am I a very lucky idiot for using 30lb Mono as my tippet?

Thanks,

Josh

Maybe- that looks like pretty large fly. You might want to try 50lb or 80lb fluorocarbon. Another possiblity is 50lb Tyger Leader material (you can use standard knots to tie it). I'd try the 80 lb flouro first, i.e., to see how it affects the action of the fly.

Have fun!
Al

Josh - Congrats on a great fly caught fish. I haven't played with muskies much with a flyrod but have with pike and much more extensively in saltwater. For fish with teeth when presentation isn't a factor all you really need is 4-5' of 50# flouro and a 50# bite tippet (a 12" piece of Tyger Leader tied in with a double surgeons knot). The Tyger leader material is great stuff because it can be tied easily.

Contrats....but was that better than one taking a sucker while you're standing on a dock?

A lot of the fish in that pond do have that awesome color...I like it!

Halfpint....hmmmm....you know me too well. It wasn't quite as cool since the pier/sucker fish was 48", but the 38" on the fly was still pretty #*^@ nifty.

Josh,

That is a great fish. I hope you stick with it catching a musky on a fly rod has to be a lot of fun.

I'm jealous. I was planning on getting one on the fly this year but someone stole my fly rod out of my boat. Nice job on the muskie!

That's really cool, good for you. I used to fish a fair amount for chum salmon with a fly, spectacular fighters. They would almost immediately strip out 50 yards of line upon hooking them and they never, never, give up even when they are exhausted! The right fly rod can handle a huge fish with ease.
