| For all the bucktails and double 10's and the sort I have a few questions regarding the middle hook. I know there are two designs, one with the wire through the eye of the hook and another with two split rings connected from wire to hook, following? I'm afraid that my wraps of kevlar thread will not be strong enough to hold the middle hook, it may slip four inches. Should I worry? What are the best ways to make certain that the middle hook will stay? Solder? Any thoughs and inputs would be great... |

Location: Land of the Musky | Can you take a picture of what your talking about? Not clear to me. Here is a picture of what I do. This is a naked view without the skirts on but with the collars where the skirts would be tied too. Hope this helps.

| I have just been using the metal beads and shafts on the front half of the lure and then I wrap .031" wire around the shaft so I can tie the bucktail, marabou, and flash, right to the wire. I Don't believe that the front hook will hold on my baits (When I pull on them I can barely get them to move, but if even a small 'ski was on I think I could be in for some problems), I have already made quite a few like this, I'm assuming if the hook slipped that last four or five inches that may be bad???? Let me know if there is any quick fixes. Or if I should tear the lure apart I will be styling the underbody a little differently know. |

Location: Land of the Musky | I would use heavier wire. All of my DOMINATRIX and BOOTY TAILS are made with 0.062" wire but 0.051" wire is also good. To get those hooks to stay just use beads with a larger diameter than your split rings. If already built, just put on a smaller diameter split ring. Just amke sure the split rings have a good "pull" rating. Bucher super strong rings are a good choice. Some other guys here may have a few other good pointers for you too. Most are out fishing though

Location: On your favorite spot | Hi, if I'm understanding right, you seem to be building your baits from the top down. Try it from the bottom up, it'll improve spacing I think conceptually, it's a little easier to organize. There shouldn't be any exposed wireshaft anywhere but above the blades.
Split rings are great because it takes alot of the tourque advantage away from fish as they thrash, highly recommend using split rings instead of going through the eye - the pic above is a great breakdown. If you want to use the hook in-line with the shaft, you can use a split ring on one of the treble shanks to run the wire through it and secure it. Check out the harassers if you get a chance, I think they are still made like that.

| Let's see if I can explain what I do....keep in mind, I'm Polish.
I used to make bucktails and just hung a hook on a clevis on the wire, but I wanted something more solid, so this is what I do.......remember.Polish!
First I bend the eye of the treble hook back toward the 'Y' hooks, then I slide a split ring over the shaft of the treble and slide that on the shaft, then I take a 'snowman' shaped body or a series of beads and stack it on top of the splitring. The bottom of the 'snowman' has to be bigger than the split ring. Once I slide that on, I put the wire through the bent hook eye, and presto, the hook is held tight against the shaft of the bucktail, and after I add more layers and bodies and blades etc. and twist the end of the shaft to make the front eye of the lure, it usually won't move up and down more than 1/2". When I stack more hair or whatever I'm using over that, I tie bucktail in sections on plastic tubes like they use for salmon flies, and I'll stack what ever color combinations that I want on top of the second treble. The first section is tied on keel weighted coils.
Does that make sense?

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | tackle booty seems to be the best way for the center hook. The two split rings allows for replacing the hook easily if rusted or needs to be cut when releasing a fish. The two larger diameter brass beads then the split ring diameter works great on hooking a fish. SHHHH I do it the same on my tails. |

| I may be in the minority here, but all my 'tails use one hook. I've yet to have a fish get hooked on the second (middle) treble on Double Cowgirls or the early styles of my bait. The rear hook is easy on the fish since many will simply rush the bait from behind and inhale the lure. Most of the fish I've caught on my baits have been nippers or figure 8 strikes. It may also be a real pain if your flashabou is the "standard" width and not the magnum size.
That said, some of my beefier marabou baits have a second hook in the middle... but those haven't been tested.
I guess after writing this, the jury is still out. Lots of fish being caught on the single treb DC-10s and the double treble Cowgirls/Big Mamas, etc. Not sure it really matters a whole lot, IMO... Just make sure your hooks are SHARP. |

Location: The Yahara Chain | I put my front hook on just like Tacklebooty does. I personally would not throw a double ten without two hooks. I have caught a lot of them on the front hook. Yes, your nippers and your figure eight fish will be hooked only on the rear hook but I have found a lot of fish just t-bone them and get hooked by the front one. |

That is what I use for the front hook, the back hook has a 6/0 VMC hook that is also a 4x hook. I am not a big fan of the Mustad 3551's that most people use. |

Location: Iowa | I like throw double 10 with two hooks at night and during the day it doesn't really matter. At night when the fish is locked in to that big pulse, that front hook will really help out when those fish try to t-bone that lure at night.
