O.K. My first boat I had for 15 years and never had to change a trailer light, I always thought it was because I unplugged the lights every time before backing it in the water. My new boat has trailer brakes and when you unplug the lights to back up the brakes will come on. ( I know you can put the pin in the coupler to prevent this, but it is kind of a pain ) What do you guys do? Leave the lights plugged in or ???

Thanks,
Tom P

I leave mine plugged in. THe light casing are supposed to be 'sealed'. So far no problems. 3 seasons worth of fishing.

unplugging or plugging in the lights when you back in won't affect thier lifespan. as stated, they're supposed to be sealed; if they aren't, and you back in unplugged, it'll just fry when you plug it back in.

Butterwheels isn't exactly right. If you plug them back in and the lights are full of water it might pop the bulbs, but if there's no water in the case you'll be fine. The reason they pop in the water is that the bulbs are hot, and the water is not. I switched mine out to LEDs and it was the best thing I've done.

But it they leak any water, they will pop. The bulbs are not only hot when you are backed in the water. 10+ years of using the sealed units, and have never had one bulb pop. I leave them plugged in all the time.

If you have a sealing problem, replace them with LED lights.

Thanks, everyone.... the trailer does have the LED lights, so I will leave them plugged in.
