Hello to all musky hunters in this forum!

First of all I want to say something about me. I am a fanatic German pike fisher. I love to fish for pike with all kind of lures. Since a few weeks the pike season is opened. The weeks before the opening I spent some time to take a look for what is new on the tackle market in Germany. But I hardly found something what really interests me!
My thought was that there is not so much difference between pike and musky which means that lures which work well for musky probably work well for pike, too. So I spent the last days with surfing on American and Canadian musky sites. I read a lot of interesting articles about musky fishing. Inspired by that I took a closer look at specific musky tackle sites (tackle manufacturers, tackles shops and so on).
It is really unbelievable to see this big offer of specific musky tackle you have over there. Especially the giant amount of different musky lures of all kind fascinates me.

I would really like to test musky tackle for our German pikes. I think that 99,9% of our pikes did not have seen these various musky lures, yet. So this might be the chance to hook up an really big one which ignores the standard lures which a thrown day per day around him.

But for me as a poor university student it is not possible to order tackle in the United States or Canada because it is very expensive. You have to pay customs, duty, insurance and so on.

So I just wanted to ask if there are musky hunters who would like to give away some musky tackle for testing on German pike. Especially I am interested in lures (crankbaits, jerkbaits, twitchbaits, bucktails, spinnerbaits and so on), but also in other tackle (e. g. terminal tackle).
I am really looking forward to test some musky stuff.

Tight lines from Germany.

You probably should confirm your ID and address, post some pictures of your fishing success past and present, and join us in conversation for awhile before asking for freebies. PM me with your information, where you fish in Germany, and how you would expect to get the baits from here to over there...we have some very generous folks here.

I did not have the money to buy a digital camera, yet. But I hope to get one if I have got enough money to buy one.
Most of the time I go fishing alone. So there is nobody who could take photographs. And I practice catch and release when fishing for pike so it is impossible that anyone takes photographs of the fish when I am back home.
I have only got some pictures of "zander" which a similar to your walleyes. But these are not nice pictues, because they were taken at home. I took some of these zander home for eating so it was possible to take photographs.
I fish in different kind of water in northern Germany. That means that I fish in small and big rivers and in small and big lakes.

OK, sounds good, let's talk on the boards a bit and have folks get to know you a little better. Thanks for the reply!

I have to say that this is a great forum. There are so much interesting threads... unbelievable.
My problem is that I hardly understand the posts. My dictionary helps a little bit but there are a lot of specific fishing words which are not listed. And there is also a lot of slang which I never learned at school.
So it is not easy for me to follow your discussions or even take part!

Well I'm recommending that you do so we can get to know you. We have many anglers from Europe onsite, from several countries, so join the general discussion and let's talk German Pike.

Welcome aboard Grimreaper80. I was stationed in Germany in the 70's and 80's with the U.S. Army and fished every chance I could. It was really a shock to have to go through all the "Red Tape" and expense to fish over there but, it was worth it. I fished the Main, Rhein and, Neckar Rivers as well as many small lakes.
You might want to look into modifiing you current collection of baits and/or change your presentations. Alot of guy's on this site (myself included) have 100's of baits but, normally only fish a handful regularly. You need to experiment all the time to be consistent with your catches. Fisherman as well as the fish become conditioned sometimes so, change things up a little. Hope this helps and don't worry about the words you don't understand. With enough exposure you will learn them. I learned German when I was there by getting out and communicating with your countrymen. Regards, Pat

Hi Pat,
thanks for your posting. Did you like fishing German waters? On what species did you fish?
Yeah, I know that every angler has his prefered baits. But I really like to test new stuff. That is why I took a closer look at the lures you use over there when fishing musky. I seems that there are hundreds of different lures for every special situation available. This great offer is what I really like. I think if you go to an big American fishing shop for musky tackle you could spent hours and hours in looking through the assortment!

Hehe I know that feeling, terror, joy and confusion describes my feelings when I visited R&H last year. I did offcourse spend some money, but Im sure the confusion part saved my visa from melting.

Grim,
A lot of guys had been going into the "German Tackle" store with reports of catching some nice pike on my SuperDs. He just got about 400 of my SuperDs in a variety of colors. If you live close you can see some stuff there. http://www.germantackle.de/

I bought 2 Grim Reaper bucktails some time ago on a fair. I did not bought any other tackle because their price reached my budget. One bucktail was around 25 Euro but I did not like to leave fair without buying them! They look great with their hairy buck and if you see the spinners which are offered in tackle shops here (just normal small spinners without a buck) these bucktails are GIANT! I do not like to fish these small normal spinners for pike anymore because they are used by almost all anglers. And I like to fish big lures for pike to have the chance to hook up the ultimative big one.
Today when fishing I lost one of the Grim Reaper bucktails... Because I like them much I took Grimreaper80 as my forum name! *hehe*only
At the water it came up to my mind to build bucktails on my own. I think they should be easier to produce than crankbaits, jerkbaits and so on. The problem is the material you need... the blades and the other parts of the lure. And probably you need special pliers for the wire.
When thinking of producing my own bucktails I got an idea. I did not see any bucktail in the web which has its weight just in front of the lure. They all have a line of lead balls on their axis. I do not know how to describe it but perhaps you can imagine that one big lead ball just in front of the axis (beween axis and leader) might be better if you do not want to steady retrieve the lure. With the weight in front of the lure it sinks in a different way (the weight pulls down the complete lure and when the weight is on the axis the lure sinks in a horizontal position). I am sure that the blade will also rotate when you stop retrieving and let the lure sink when having the weight in front of the lure.
Perhaps you understand what I mean. The bucktail only need balls from plastic on its axis and one big lead ball in front of it.
What do you think of this idea? Perhaps this kind of bucktail works well in an up-and-down style. Something like "pull it -> let it sink -> pull it -> let it sink ...".

The problem with spinnerbaits might be that you miss a lot of strikes. The pike attacks this lure but I think you do not hook it up safely. So I think spinnerbaits are better used under very weedy conditions.
The hooking percentage when using a bucktail with treble hook should be much better.

Contact Jochen Boettcher at www.Pikeworld.de he has been to the Chicago show, seen a lot of baits, fished LOTW and could give you advise. There's also Fachversand Stollenwerk (www.cebbra.de I think) the pair of them import American and British baits. If no luck with them try PA Hogberg at Lundgrens in sweden one of the major bait importers from the US. Failling all that, save your money and fly to the Chicago show in January!!
