Subject: Filleting Pike questions

Many years ago there was a guy who looked like Saric selling a video at the shows about how to fillet pike. He was demonstrating his technique on real fish at the show. He could filet a pike in seconds and get only one piece of meat per side and NO BONES. Does anyone remember this guy? Is his video still available? I'm not filleting another pike until I learn a better technique

Thanks.

Menace(wait a second it says lunch box in the post),

I don't know the name of the guy, but he has an infomercial relating to filleting any fish. The infomercial shows him filleting a pike and pulling out all the Y-Bones as he goes. Can't help with the name but I know the video is still out there.

I learned the technique from Brian Major, second best self proclaimed Indian Muskie Guide in all of Canada.

Take the fillet off the fish, boning out the rib cage. Find the center line of the fillet, and exactly bisect the top section with a knife-tip cut that clicks along the bones from the front of the fillet all the way to the rear, exactly splitting the top portion of the fillet in equal sections. DO NOT cut through the bones, let the knife click over them cutting to, but not through them.

Go Back to the centerline of the still intact fillet, and from the centerline cut UNDER the bones ( from the centerline to the thick, or top part of the meat, knife nearly flat to the table) about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch all the way from the front of the fillet to the back. Grab the flap you have created at the top and front of the fillet, and pull back toward the rear. All the bones will come out like a zipper!!

As soon as I return from my trip next week I will do a MuskieFIRST Video filming this technique for you, and beg Zach to edit it and get it available ASAP!!

I will try to get a crude drawing up in another thread in a minute....

Steve, Awesome use of the video capability, can't wait to see it. I had trouble visioning your directions. I'll be on the chip for memorial day which is filled with those tasty little treats. Now I have a shot at actually salvaging some meat form them.

Go to the fillet rough drawing and save it to a 31/2 or print it out. Not very good art, but will help! I will film the technique as soon as I get back![]

Lunchie, I got a Gary Roach video this winter that shows in detail how to fillet all kinds of fish, including PIKE. Great video, will let it go for a bait. I live 45 min from the chip, I can meet you there. Let me know, thx.

I learned this tecnique from the old man. It takes some practice but once you get it down you can fillet the y bones out in about 30 seconds. I never have quite caught up to the old man in speed.

I did finally beat him on the water though. Two years back on Leech. I caught a 48.5 (my biggest) and he caught a 46. It was a beautiful day.
