This thread has taken an interesting turn. To produce, shoot, and edit a show is very time consuming. Most hosts simply do not have the time to go and scout certain patterns/lakes. Although in most cases, Keyes included, they are very capable fishermen that could.

Even guys like the Lindners, Dahlberg, Saric, etc. have guides/locals film with them or scout beforhand. All are very accomplished anglers, but the logistics and efficiency of filming makes it necessary to utilize outside sources.

Gillespie is a lifelong fisherman, and after 12 years of filming a show is probably also very capable of going it alone. His formula, however, depends on multiple personalities as well as fish/info to make it work.

While filming our videos, we try to strike some sort of a balance. Lets say we're going to Mille Lacs for 3 days to film. We could get on a pattern and turn out a show. Several times traveling to places we have done it our own. But my opinion on the matter was: Wouldn't the viewers rather hear/learn about patterns/techniques etc from guys like Jonesi, Thomas, Ronnestrand, than us? Those guys are out there every day, and usually can talk of how conditions maybe developed over the last few weeks that lead to what we're doing now, something we wouldn't know. Even though our crew is very capable of catching fish without them, utilizing our contacts within the muskie world makes for a better overall experience for everyone.

I think most hosts would rather get on fish by themselves, spend the time scouting, but logistics just don't make it possible. Again, just my opinion.

We've all been muskie fishing, we know what its like. Watching it on TV has to be more than what it would be like being in the boat that day. I'm thinking about the most accomplished anglers I know, and what kind of show you'd wind up with if it was just them fishing and a camera filming... Sure, you'd have some good days and get some great footage, and maybe if you were lucky there'd be some decent dialogue provided that angler had the right personality. But their running the boat, watching their electronics, and fishing. Filming that? Well, that might be fun, but can you make a show out of it? A TV show is a product, its got to sell. It's got to have appeal, and be something that can attract sponsors. It has to be entertaining, informative, and provide something that makes a lot of people want to watch it. And I don't see that being very effective unless whoever is doing the show can concentrate on making a show instead of finding fish, running the boat, essentially guiding and filming while doing it. Unless you had other guides and other personalities, and focused your attention on making a product you could sell, I think you'd probably wind up blowing your whole budget filming before you got enough footage for an episode. And what footage you had would probably be pretty boring.

Keyes Outdoors is my fave without a doubt. The others are good, but I look forward to it every Saturday. I liked that they shot some good skyline and Badger stuff this week! Seem like good guys and the show is down to earth.
