Location: Beaver County, Pennsylvania | i've always used mono backing for my PP and braided lines but was wondering what kinds of knots some of you guys used for attaching the mono backing to the braid......
also, are there any lines out there that for whatever reason you don't use a backing? maybe lines you havent had slip because of a certain reel spool, type of line, etc....?
lastly, i have noticed with some of my lines over the years that it has a tendency to want to bury itself in the rest of the line......i spool my line very tightly but sometimes and for what reason i don;t know, the line seems to want to loosen up and eventually will find itself buried with a strong hookset or snag.....any advice here?

| I tie my braid and mono together with a double Trilene knot onto themselves. On my 401 TE, it's filled with strait PP since it has that little knob on the spool.
If you let out all your line with a topwater and reel it back in, you'll find it will pack better and it won't dig anymore.

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | Lines tend to loosen on the spool when you use a bait that doesn't have a lot of resistance on the retrieve; something like a Bulldawg or a jerkbait for example. When I use a bait that doesn't resist a lot on the retrieve, I will pinch the line between my thumb and forefinger during the retrieve on about every fourth or fifth cast to keep some resistance and help the line pack tightly on the spool.
For the connecting knot between the backing and braid, I use a Uni knot. |

| Albright knot is the best in my opinion. Make sure you wet it and pull it down tight. |

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | uni knot to uni knot has proven to be easier to tie than a blood knot for me. I can never get a blood knot to hold when using mono to mono splices. Uni knots have been used now for about 5 years and have not had one failure yet. |

| I tie a back to back uni knot but the knot here doesn't really matter. You are never going to get down to the knot with a musky. I have also just tied double granny knots and they have worked just fine also. |

Location: Maple Grove | You can always put a piece of tape on the spool to prevent slippage instead of mono backing. Line is spendy though and you can spool more reels with backing. |

| Uni knot onto some 20# Trilene. I agree with reelman, I'll never see that mono.

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I spool up my reels about 80% with mono, usually cheap 10 pound test from Wal-Mart...get a 500 yard spool for like $4.00. Then I simply just tie two regular knots. Nothing fancy, no special name knot...just tie the two lines together.
No reason to spool up with a bunch of braided line. I have about 2 casts worth of line on my reel. That knot and mono has no pressure on it what so ever.
No need to get carried away with a special knot and spool up 200 yards of braided line. Use cheap mono and use a lot of it and simply tie the two lines together. |

Location: Long Prairie, Minnesota | I believe that a uni knot works great, however, like stated above, since you are never going to get to the knot, just do what works for you.
On another note......how often do you change your mono backing? Last night I was respooling my 7000 and when I got down to the mono it wasn't the best looking, but I figured since I dont really use the mono it will be fine for the season. Should I have changed the backing????? |

Location: Yahara River Chain | I would think the only time you would fill the entire spool, is when you are long line trolling as you will find out real quick when a good one peels off a mess of line and exposes your backing knot.

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | I back my 7000's with about 50' of mono only and the rest is braid. I do this so that i minimize the amount of line wasted when you "hit the knot". If the braid gets low, simply peel the braid off either on the lake or in the yard and put more backing on. I also buy 1200 yd spools of line and i don't want to waste any of it. |

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | If you put two cast worth of braided line on your reels and fill the rest up with cheap mono you won't be wasting anything. At the end of the year, reverse the spools onto other reels and your good to go. No line wasted. |

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | Where i fish the line gets frayed a lot so I am constantly cutting the frayed line off. 2 casts worth of line would last about 2 months before you were casting to the knot. The fewer times you cut the line on the spool the less line you waste. |
