I know this is a real dumb question for you guys who fish big waters up north but for a guy living in Missouri and having just bought a used rig that came with a Marine Band Radio..........what stations do you use when your our fishing? Is it specific to the area/state your fishing? Also fish in Canada, is it different for up there?

Appreciate the instruction period on this one.

I just put a marine band radio in my boat. The Muskie club I belong to uses channel 7 exclusively so that when I am out on the lake, I can broadcast on 7 to see if any fellow club members are fishing and if they have any useful intel. I also have a list of channels that are in use by other user. For instance, the local marina is tuned to one channel so that anyone who needs help on the water can call for assistance if needed. I also monitor the weatehr channels. You will need to research locally to see if any channels are in use that are useful to you for the bodies of water you fish.

Hail or call for assistence from official sources (CG, police...) on 16. Then they'll switch you to their working freq. For general chit-chat, that'll be a local channel. Stay off 21, 22, 23, 81, 82, and 83. Those are our working freqs....not that you'll have much CG radio traffic in KCMO!

I'm pretty sure the FCC regulates channel assignment and so forth...that might be a place to start. Other than that, I think it'd be a local thing. If I recall, ch 18 was the charter boat channel in Kodiak, and 28 was the alternate.
