Location: Browerville, Minnesota | Just found out some interesting news that the Minnesota DNR is doing for vets returning from Iraq/Afghanistan. For two years after you return and are released from your deployment orders, you need not purchase a Minnesota fishing license. You do need to carry a copy of your DD 214 which shows your release date and that you were deployed. As an example, I was released from my orders on 19 Aug 07, so I don't have to purchase a MN fishing license until 19 Aug 09. Way to go MN DNR!!! |

Location: Ogden, Ut | It's a great gesture and I hope more states follow that lead. As far as I'm concerned, they shouldn't have to buy one ever again or at the very most just have to pay resident costs.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Bret, Because of your post I started communications with our legislature, here in Michigan, to adopt something similar when they review bills concerning license fees early next year. In only a day I've been able to get the head of the Natural Resources committee to pledge his support for a bill with "free" 2 year veteran fishing licenses on it. Hopefully I can get my state on board with something similar to Minnesota. Thanks for getting me started on this!!
