What's the best way to clean your reel? From start to finish what are some opinions on how to maintain your reels properly to get years and years out of them?

Check out the articles section on this site http://heartlandtackleservice.com/ it gives basics on how to service shimano and Abu reels.

The Heartland site "how to's" are not very good or complete in my opinion. If you are going to do it, do it complete and right or don't do it at all. Heartlands Abu description is more cosmetic than anything.

I just use the reel schematic that comes in the box with the reel. The best way I've found is to just take your time. Lay all the parts out in the order they came off the reel, and in the direction they were facing. Before you take anything off, look it over to see exactly how it fits together, what parts are attached to it, etc. Again, TAKE YOUR TIME. As long as you put it together in the opposite order in which it came apart, you should be fine. I tear the whole reel down first, and then clean/oil the parts one at a time as I re-assemble them.

Things to note:

- Don't over lubricate. A small drop of oil on any moving parts is enough.
- If its got teeth it should be greased lightly. Otherwise, use oil. (worm gear gets oil)
- Do not oil the drag washers, they should be dry.

Cleaning: I prefer to just wipe down most parts with a rag. The drive and pinion gears, and the worm gear are easily cleaned with a toothbrush, a little dish soap, and hot water.

has anyone here heard of soaking parts in solvent to completely remove all grease and oil and then re-applying fresh lubes....

I'd be concerned about those solvents reacting with any plastic or rubber parts inside the reel. If it dissolves grease and oil, it probably dries out rubber and may even melt plastic.

I take my reels apart and soak them in 409 or simply green. Then clean them off and use a cotton swab to get everything cleaned out and dry. Rinse and then I only use a little grease on the major areas of pressure and oil just about everywhere else. I switched over to reel butter from hot sauce this year. But getting grease out of the reel is good because grease can attract dirt and that isn't good for moving parts. The only drawback is having to keep up on the oiling during the year.

I also upgraded my Abu with a ceramic pawl and carbon fiber drag disks. The pawl will not wear out and the carbon fiber disk stops on a dime. Some of my other reels I actaully will replace the graphite bushings with ball bearings and I have been thinking about upgrading my bearings on the reels, but it hasn't been a major issue with the BB I have now.....

But I agree, do not get oil or grease anywhere near the drag disks....and they should be backed down when you are not on the water...

Good fishing!

Check out mikesreelrepair.com or tackletour.com, tons of info on cleaning/greasing and hot rodding (performance bearings, drag discs, etc.).
