Random quote: "Son, you did a great job!" - Dad, on his first outing in my boat watching me catch my biggest musky to-date. (funny how we always long to hear our Dads say that...)

Subject: Top coat question

I have been making baits a few years now and can't find a top coat I am happy with yet that will hold up to hook swinging, and pointers. Even with T-ing the hooks jerkbaits after awhile will get enough hook rash two ware threw four coats of Poly-tex, and the front hook will stick in the side of the bait. What do you guy's use, is their a product that is somewhat bullet proof, that will solve this problem.......Thanks Dave

I use Devcon 2ton, which is probably one of the hardest top coats around, but when trolling at 4 to 6 miles per hour, with big baits and big sharp hooks, and your baits are wood, some hook rash and damage by fish is definitely going to happen. I "T" mine also and still get some rash. If you fish the baits hard like most of us do, you will get ware. Nature of the beast. I used to worry about it, but I don't anymore....Most of my big fish catching baits are the beat up ones anyway...lol

Isn't Devcon 2 ton epoxy very brittle, and doesn't it yellow quick in the sun?

Devcon will crack if you throw it into rocks enough, but I have had good success with it. It is not as flexible as some of the other top coats, but it is also harder for the toothy fish to sink their teeth into. As far as yellowing goes, I see no difference than with etex, crystal sheen, new lustre 55 or any other type epoxy....they will all yellow if left in the sun for periods of time. I fish my baits and put them back in the box and never had a problem with the yellowing.

Dave, I've been on a similar quest for several years. There really is no ideal product out there for this application. You're looking for something that's not outrageously expensive, that isn't too difficult to apply, that doesn't yellow or fade, and that will hold up to the rigors we put these baits through...I don't really think there is such a product, yet. We might have to attack this problem from the inside out though...I'm still working on that....
