| I know I have herd that there are muskies in the Winnebago system, but do many people really go out an fish them? Maybe with some stocking efforts could this become a good Muskie lake? What do you think? |

| Stocking of Great Lakes strain muskies in the Winnebago System lakes and rivers has been going on since 1998, though none have been stocked into Lake Winnebago directly. All numbers below are Great Lakes Spotted Strain (GLSS) muskies and sizes shown are average sizes stocked during the time period specified:
Fox River (Winnebago County portion) has received 7,782 large fingerling (8.6" - 12.65") and 73 fall yearling (20") GLSS muskies since 2002.
Lake Butte des Morts has received 3,858 large fingerling (9" - 12.25") and 589,643 fry (0.6" - 0.7") GLSS muskies since 2002.
Lake Poygan has received 6,340 large fingerling (9.8" - 12.4") and 1,162 small fingerling (2.5") GLSS muskies since 2002.
Little Lake Butte des Morts has received 97,200 fry (0.5"); 31,600 small fingerling (0.7"); 8,956 large fingerling (7.3" - 12.5"); 354 yearling (13.5 - 14.8"); and 121 fall yearling (20" - 22") GLSS muskies since 1998.
Wolf River (Winnebago County portion) received 71 fall yearling (20") GLSS muskies in 2007.
All told, there have been nearly three quarters of a million GLSS muskies stocked into the Winnebago System since 1998.

Location: Rhinelander. | you neglected the 1000's of muskies that the winnebagoland club put into puckaway. Thet will filter through the sysyem also.

| Can someone explain what the differance is between a great lakes strain muskie and a muskie you would find in northern WI? |

The only difference is slight and is in the way the fish are marked. GLSS muskies are the strain once native to that system, and thus are the strain being re-introduced there. Generally Great Lakes strain fish are spotted, not barred though all 3 patterns (spotted, barred, clear) can occur on all 3 strains of muskies (Mississippi River, Great Lakes, Ohio River). |

| When fishing on these bodies of water, are you able to troll? Or do you have to cast? |

| You can troll the whole system, except the Wolf River, above Poygan.
I caught a 42" on Poygan last year, on a jig and a crawler. I saw the fish swirl, and put a full crawler on, and casted in front of it. I was rewarded when the fish ate the offering, and after a spirited fight, I water released the fish. |

Location: Appleton,WI | Actually yes there was a stocking of spotted musky in winnebago direct it was near and around garlic island area.I believe there is a article comming up in the summer issue of musky hunter of the winnebago system if your interested in this body of water. |
