Posts: 96 | I've got the itch REAL bad. No way I can make it until June 7th for the MN ski opener. I've been reading up on Kinkaid & Cave Run but 12-16 hours seems like a looong hike with a boat in tow. Anything a little closer (to MN, & open) that you recommend? Thanks in advance.

Posts: 785 | Not that I've fished many of them but there are some good lakes in northern Illinous, Indiana and Missouri, and some fair lakes in Iowa. A little research into these areas could produce some good lakes to try. Also if you don't mind waiting you could always pop into Wisconsin in May and get a small jump start to your season.

Posts: 313 Location: On your favorite spot | open water in northern missouri, decent chance at some action at Hazel Creek in Kirksville for fish up to mid-40s, probably 6 hours from the cities, electric motor only

Posts: 785 | I was thinking more like waiting until mid march or early april (still a lot better than waiting until june 7th), not much open right now. If northern Missouri has open water that would be crazy becouse last weekend in southern Iowa I was fishing a farm pond on 14 inches of ice.

Posts: 1316 Location: Lebanon,Mo | I can get you on Pomme De Terre or Fellows Lake here in Missouri.Open water pretty much all year other than maybe a skim of ice for about two weeks.March can be a little slow, with April better.I will be over on Kincaid in a few weeks and then our first muskie tourn. in Missouri is at the end of March.

Posts: 431 | Am I correct that Fellows Lake is 40 hp or less and you can't launch with a larger motor even if not using it? I've wanted to fish Fellows but don't know anybody with a boat to fit the bill. I was thinking about bringing my canoe down there sometime.

Posts: 1316 Location: Lebanon,Mo | 40hp is right, nothing bigger sitting on the back of the boat.Must get permit to fish it($5.00/yr)But it's one the hottest muskie lakes we have. After i convinced the R&D at G3 that i could run a v172t with a 40hp and top out around 25mph,i purchased the largest boat i could run with a 40hp.I had two boats for bigger water and Fellows, but that was a pain. MoMuskies,i can hook you up on Fellows anytime im free or give some advice. Edited by missourimuskyhunter 2/27/2008 12:10 PM

Posts: 1061 Location: Medford, WI | Tonka, if you've never been to Cave Run or the Kentucky area, I would definitely reccomend it. Two buddies and I went there (Cave Run) last year for spring break for a few days fishing. We hit the worst cold front I've seen (80 the day before we got there, 40 for a high when we got there, then 30, then 20's), it was snowing/raining and wind was blowing. We were in a tent camping, but seriously just to get down there, be on some open water, and see the landscape was well worth it for me. We're headed back there March 19th again...hopefully the weather will favor us a little more this year. Let me know if you end up going anywhere; I'd be interested in finding out how it was. -Jake Bucki

Posts: 96 | Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'd like to hit them all, but I'll have to see what my wife lets me get away with. I'll let you know how it goes.

Posts: 37 | Fished Hazel Creek in MO March 20-21 last year. Without stopping, you can make it in about 7 hours from west end of Tonka. Neat lake to fish. "Stumps" in 25' of water. Didn't see a thing except one 3 lb bass. Trolling motor only and when the wind started blowing, it plain sucked. However, we'll be heading down again the first week of April to try our luck again. Hopeful that water temps will be into the mid 50's by then. C'mon warm spring. Mike Wallace

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Last year The Big O and I hit Kincaid on the 24th of March and raised a few fish. Spawn was in full swing due to a recent fast warm up so we backtracked to Shelbyville Res and I stuck a nice 41-inch prespawn ski to make the trip. Just getting back on the water was enough. Just do it, you will be happy you did. Get fishing, quit wishin. Edited by Mikes Extreme 2/28/2008 10:22 AM Attachments ---------------- 41in5x3.jpg (55KB - 132 downloads)
