I'm stuck at work in retail sales with 2-3 inches of snow/ice/sleet outside today and no shoppers so I thought I'd ask. How many of this board have had the pleasure of tackling the mighty Manitou ? My brother bought a place up there 12 years ago and we fished it for 10 plus years before that. It's dear to our hearts.

It can tough in a million different ways, after all it's ultra clear lake trout water. But the rewards can be great. The solitude and scenery is second to none. If you have had the pleasure to fish it how would you compare it to other big name lakes up north ? I ask because I have not fished any of the popular places. I spend all my vacation time in the carribean or on the Manitou. We are on the straights between the Upper and Lower . MD

You turkey ! --- Anyone that would would share a meal with me at the "Beach" is welcome to come to Camp Beaverhead ! For real -anytime I'm in camp the invitation is open. And if any one else is up in our neck of the northwoods stop by and say Hi. Really we don't see many decidated musky guys up our way. The resorts south of us require crossing the lower tou' , no fun if the wind is up. We go all week most weeks w/o seeing other musky guys, sometimes anyone else at all. Dan

MD,

If you recall, we traded a couple of PMs on the mighty Manitou. I have had the pleasure. Spent 4 days there back in 2002 and caught my PB there. An awesome lake indeed. Yes, trout water can be tough, down right brutal sometimes, but the rewards are worth it. The group I fish with has fished a # of the trout water lakes up there - including Crow, Manitou, Pipestone, Rowan - with a few PBs coming from them.
Some might ask, why haven't I returned? Oh, I will. My buddy and I have been taking our sons to Canada the last couple years, and will be for the next couple (until sports and girls take over more of their life LOL!), so we've been fishing non-trout water systems and places a little more convenient to get to for their sake.
Whenever we do make it back there, we'd like to explore taking you up on your offer provided you have room in camp.
Catch up with you later with more about the Manitou's jewels!
Giddy up!

I haven't heard that name Camp Beaverhead since I first fished the straits in 1976 and again in 1979. It really was an amazing place back then with lots of big ski's and pike. The smallies and lakers were also outstanding ! The camp back then was owned by the Weinerts and later by a gentleman named Peterson who I believe flew for the Ministry.I remember my dad had a follow once and set down his rod and said "you wouldn't believe how big that fish was !" I honestly think he was more afraid than amazed. It was our first trip to canada and we've been crossing the border ever since....I'm glad to hear that someone is "minding the shop" because that trip will always be one of my most memorable adventures.Have you guys tried Kawnipi (?) it had the biggest smallies we've ever seen and we took "honest" 5 lbers for granted back then ! I did go back in 85 and fished the southern end but was Hugely dissapointed because of the "meat hunter" mentality that was so prevalent at that camp.

The camp was purchased from Pete Peterson. A fine gentleman with decades and decades of experience in the northwoods. He still comes up to Camp once a year usually in the spring to watch his beloved Loons nest. Fascinating man, very quiet but full of humor and stories when he gets going. we have been extremely conscious of the camp and the history of the place. All the buildings/cabins have been preserved.

The smallmouth lake might have been Kamini ? Its a portage lake off Olsen Bay. As for the meathunter stuff our group does'nt even mess with bringing fish back to the states. And exactly zero ski's have been kept in the 11 years we have been there. We eat some pike/bass but don't even know much about catching lakers. We stick to the ski's. see ya MD

I have fished the manitou. i worked at a camp this summer up there, manitouweatherstation.com. located at the top end of the lower manitou. about a 5 minute boat ride from beaverhead. great fishing up there, first year i ever really fished muskie. ended up catching a 46incher right off the main dock at camp. i have been in kamini last year, still chalked full of smallies. come on over sometime for coffee and cookie. if you want maybe i will have to take you out for some trout fishing.

How about a trade a trip, Mille Lacs Muskies for Muskies and Lakers on the Manitou! Just back from a 3 day ice trip for Lakers. Tough fishing but I'm hooked. Do they get fished up there through the ice? I'm all in! Steve

Be careful what you ask for !! trouble is the only lakers I luck into are those starvin' ones who come up and attack a suick or twitch bait. Now if you want to trade ski's for ski's LOL Were you ice fishing on the manitou ? lower ? I would love to go up to camp in the winter but I'm a workin stiff, can't waste vacation time that can be used in the summer. take care MD

ice fishing for lakers is the best time for the big boys. we were up there 2 weeks ago putting up ice for the summer and we caught some nice big ones. sure do fight good through the ice.

I just made my reservation 2 days ago at the Manitou Weather Station! We are staying in the Brigadoon Cabin for the opener, June 21,22,23,24.

Words can't desribe how excited I am. It will be the wife and I and maybe another couple and I can't wait to get into some smallies and Lakers! Seeing some skis will just be an added bonus.

Not to mention that Navionics has the Manitou mapped in high def!!! sweet

Slink19, shoot me an email at [email protected], I would love to ask you some questions on the manitou.
