Posts: 412 Location: Waukesha, WI | has anyone run these locators together on the console or know if they would function simultaneously? I'd really like to compare them, and I can't think of a better way to do it. TIA, Mike

Posts: 412 Location: Waukesha, WI | OK, an update on this unusual config I suppose. After contacting Humminbird support, I learned that the side imaging transducer isn't meant for speeds above about 5 MPH. A non-side imaging transducer is required for "high speed." There is a high speed option kit that can be purchased which includes a switch, but from talking with support, the new method now is to have a shoot-thru transducer with the side imaging connected with the SIDBY Y cable to the back of the locator. I just picked up the rig last night so I haven't been able to test individual or concurrent Lowrance and Humminbird operation yet. Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Please post update as you get to compare them. The side imaging really sparks my curiosity, will be interesting to see the difference. Nice looking ride by the way, welcome to Ranger ownership.. I bought my 618 from MW, I would do business with them again in a heartbeat.

Posts: 223 Location: Minn. | ESfishOX, My brother and i run a797 hummingbirdSi and a Lowrance 111Lx at the same time and both work fine. The sideimaging works fine to 5mph, but the down or regular sonar works fine up to 35 mph on the 797,as that's as fast as we have gone. Still breaking in the Optimax. We are still learning to read the sidefinder.

Posts: 412 Location: Waukesha, WI | Thanks Mark. I put Barry and others through a lot of effort and they keep smiling. I know I asked more questions than my buddy's four year old. If you're in the area, let me know if you want to have a look at the graphs in operation. I'll let you know how things go on the maiden voyage. Two hours on the prokicker will be fun to watch the graphs. I have to remember the 1GB card to take images off the 'bird. Muskyfvr, thanks for the info. I've read up on them, but the water is the real test. I couldn't find anyone local who had much to say. I plan on comparing the Lowrance 520 with the 1197cs different cone angles and side imaging. I'll have all three areas displayed side by side to start. After taking Doc Sampson's class on recording logs and creating contours, I wouldn't go without a Lowrance unit but also wanted to see what's up with SI technology. Thanks again. Mike

Posts: 271 Location: davis,IL | I'm very interested to see some real readings from the side image (as good as the adds?). I have two Garmins (one on the trolling motor and one on the transom). I also have a Lowrance 480 on the transom, when I have both "on" they interfere with each other regardless of which two are "on". I know that the problem has to do with the frequency of the transducers. I wonder if the side image would produce the same problem (noise) if two units were running. I've read somewhere that as long as the transducer frequency was different enough that they would not interfere with each other. I like to run the Lowrance split screen with GPS and the Garmin looking down when in Canada (better safe than sorry), and would like units that are compatable, besides side imaging would probably be very interesting even on Known spots!

Posts: 1270 | I am currently running a 113 and a 797 on my dash. The 797 works fine at high speed as far as the down looking works, the side imaging needs a lower speed. While I haven't used the 797 that much yet I am not really impressed with the SI of the unit. I've yet to see anything like they show on the comercials and the ads but I've only been out with it 4 or 5 times so far.

Posts: 223 Location: Minn. | AS you go down weedlines you will be able to see inside pockets of the weeds off side of the boat,a spot on a spot, under water that you cant see from regular sonar. I was recently at Kinkaid lake and you can definately see fallen trees and stumps as well the weedlines. It takes a while to undestand the Sideimaging. Larger fish appear as long white lines with a shadow under it. The longer the shadow the higher the fish is in the water collumn. Hope that helps a little reelman. I'm still learning myself.

Posts: 1270 | How far are you guys setting your SI out to? I have been using mine on Lake Michigan set at 50' to 150' and can't see anything unless I'm right nest to a pier or something like that. The other issue I seem to have is that with a 5" screen split to show both sides that only leaves 2.5" to show 50' to 150', how big is a 6" thick fish going to look on that little of a screen?

Posts: 412 Location: Waukesha, WI | I thought of putting a 797c2 on the bow and didn't because I couldn't imagine looking at the SI view while standing up and casting. I only sprung for the 1197c because of the "just a bit more" than the 997c. I have no problem admitting I have a long way to go with the SI. Here's a couple I thought were interesting: Snapshot 4: Seagulls were congregated in this area. Hmm, let's take a look. Did I mark a cloud of gull droppings? Snapshot 28: An extension from shore. Posts: 43 | YOU CAN GET A HIGH SPEED READING WITH THE SI TRANSDUCER WHEN MOUNTED PROPERLY. CHECK OUT WWW.SIDEIMAGING.COM FOR AN UNDERSTANDING ON HOW IT WORKS AND GREAT PICS GUYS SEND IN FROM LAKES AND RESERVOIRS. SOME ARE REAL INTERESTING. ONLY BEEN OUT WITH THE BIRD A FEW TIMES, I CAN SEE WHERE THE SI IS GOING TO BE AN ADVANTAGE TO FINDING STRUCTURE, AND FISH. HUMMINBIRD WEB PAGE IS ALSO HELPFUL, THEIR ENGINEERS ANSWER QUESTIONS ON THERE WITHIN TWO DAYS, NOT LIKE LOWRANCE CALL 800 N WAIT FOR A DAY. I OWN A LOWRANCE ALSO, GREAT UNITS.
